i booked this hotel knowing its historic past and thought it would be a nice treat for my parents with whom i was traveling.
Unfortunately when we got there none of its historic charm was evident. the hotel itself is clean and presentable, but has been modernised and redecorated. The room was clean, and the beds comfortable, but the aircon didn't work well, the sink had been smashed and repaired, the bathroom was dated and it just didn't feel particularly special.
What i found particularly annoying tho was that the restaurant and bar weren't open. It felt like we were the only guests staying there, and as it was just after new years and i knew canberra would be a ghost town, if i'd been forewarned that we couldn't get anything more than a continental breakfast (for $20) i would have booked somewhere else.
I even had to ask for additional cups etc for the room - how hard is it to provide cups equal to the number of room guests? On the plus side, it is a good location, and they did give a discount on the overall bill after i complained. But it was not special and i probably wouldn't bother staying there again, except on price. Nothing else really recommends it. It stands out in its blandness in a town that is already bland enough.
