“Better value elsewhere”

The hotel appears to be clean and modern serviced apartments. My apartment was large, full kitchen. lounge with balcony overlooking the internal aspect. For the business traveller, older traveller and any one with physical limitations there are a number of drawbacks, as follows.

The internet is wired only and the desk is tiny and thin, up against a wall. Internet was at an extra charge. The hotel has a small check - in area and you walk about outside to get to your apartment, however the outside lifts only go up one floor. I then had to carry my luggage up one flight of stairs, there is no porter service to assist you and I was not told at check in. Apartments above would mean two flights of stairs. Noise comes from people talking in the outside areas. I was there on a cold Monday night so could be a lot noisier, when busier and warmer.

The apartment had three bedrooms, one bathroom, one en-suite, both small, and no bath. Bed is low. Toiletries were basic and ordinary. One tiny milk was provided and usual basic minibar without a price list. There is no room service and on check in I was told that the hotel restaurant was closed for dinner, although no mention was made of this on booking or on the website. A basic list of local restaurants was provided but the staff were unhelpful. When asked for a recommendation I was not given any additional information while the staff were not that busy.

Some noise get through between apartments.

With no food service or restaurant, you must either eat at one of many nice restaurants literally over the road, do take away or buy and cook food from the local supermarket. Not too bad except if you are really busy or happen to come in on a late plane when you could go to bed hungry! This should be made clear on the website!

For over $300 a night you can do a lot better. Probably best suit people who want longer term, family or holiday stays, with your own internet access and self catering, or want to eat out easily in the suburbs each night, and those who do not mind noise.

Lovely surrounds, big rooms - very comfortable - and that's where the good stuff ends. I booked for 2 nights.
I could write a book about my poor experience however in summary: no bag drop off; no concierge (take it too your room yourself); problems with checking in; NO LIFT and my room was on the 3rd floor; for return trips you can request a ground floor room BUT they will not guarantee until you turn up on the doorstep; the last set of steps (there are five yes 5 sets of steps) as you go out is very steep and present a falling issue; restaurant was closed for dinner even though their website says it is open for dinner (this is why I chose this hotel); reception did not know about security after hours, even though it was in their in room guestbook; information in guestbook did not match what was in the room (telephones were switched around); bed was half the normal height of a standard bed (no good for sore knees and hips and this on top of NO LIFT); and the hairdryer in the bathroom set off the smoke alarm in the hallway. I WILL NOT GO BACK!

Room Tip: When booking request and insist on a ground floor because if you have hip or knee problems the fact...

“Terrible”

Booked for one night, very unfriendly staff on desk. Could not open the balcony door, so hot and wanted to sit on the balcony, lovely chairs and little table but had to go to staff and request they open the door. Did not bother as they had to come up and open with a special key!!! said for security reasons.

No long life milk for tea or coffee - never had to go and buy milk - they say complimentary tea or coffee !!!!!! Gym out of service - if I knew that I would not have stayed there as I wanted to go to the gym!!! do not stay there!!!! lots of other nice places for the same price and was not cheap!!!!

Room Tip: none - dark could not open door

“Huge rooms, good location, but few hotel amenities”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 November 2011

The Griffin is not really a hotel but a complex of serviced apartments. My room had two bedrooms, a full kitchen, a living room, and a bathroom. This was great for my one-week stay, and it was nice to get groceries across the street and fix my own breakfasts. (The fridge was full size, but more than half filled with minibar items, so don't plan on putting too much in there.)
The room had wired internet access only, and the daily rate was pretty high. This wrecked my plans to use Skype for my overseas phone calls. I was also disappointed that the fitness room was closed for remodeling. (It was an empty shell when I peeked in.) For runners, though, there are many routes nearby. The complex itself has nice landscaping and seems well maintained.
The neighborhood was ideal for a relaxing stay. It had a suburban feel and was quiet at night, but there must be at least two dozen restaurants in the block across the street. A block the other way is a pleasant park, and the Manuka district is close by. Downtown Canberra (Civic) is too far to walk, but it's easy to reach by car. I think there is also a bus. I would definitely stay here again, as long as I didn't need to be close to the heart of the city and I could figure out a cheap way to get wifi access.

“Hits the spot and a short stagger from " Vascos"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 November 2011

Just the best spot so close not only to " Vascos" but all the other or most of the better Restaurants in Canverra. Price OK - my room a little dark but clean and roomy.
No ensuite but having stayed at most other places this is very good.
