“Good enough for a short stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

Our group was staying in cabanas behind the swimming pool. Bathroom was clean and spacy, hot water all the time, rooms were decent, but with pretty bad lighting. Better have your mosquito-net with you, the roof and windows do not look exactly 'insectproof'. Cabana had a nice small terrace towards the swimming pool, with comfy chairs. The surroundings are very nice - jungle coming close to cabanas and swimming pool, beautiful flowers, howler monkeys heard in the morning, but in the night it might get a bit scary when you're coming back to your room and listening to the jungle noises;-) Swimming pool was nice too, maybe not crystal clear, but we were very happy to be able to get some refreshment on the hot afternoon.
Maya bell is very close to the ruins (several minutes on foot to the museum, collectivos stopping at you every several minutes), so it's very convenient if you're there for short time only to see the archeological zone.
The place was pretty empty when we were there (third week of October, low season), very few people, so if we wanted to change for some more lively surroundings and get to the town, it would be a bit problematic in the night.
Food was very very average. We did not have any single meal that I could call a nice experience. It was not poisoning, it was ok to feed your stomach to survive, but it was just tasteless.
The staff were not very much interested in their guests. They were not unfriendly, but they obviously did not care too much about you. If you don't know Spanish, you are not able to communicate there, seems no one spoke English at the time we were there.
I would summarize the place as nice enough to stay (due to convenient location close to ruins), but a bit too expensive comparing to value provided.
When getting to Maya bell from Palenque town, you need to factor for additional charge at the entrance to the National Park. We were getting there around 4pm, and still had to pay the full fee (I think they are stopping charging when it gets dark, but not sure about exact timing).

“Close to the ruins, jungle setting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 November 2011

Maya Bell is as close as you get to the ruins in terms of accom. It's inside the national park and about a 20-30 minute walk up the road to the main entrance. The restaurant is really good. wi-fi has its problems, not very fast and has to be restarted on a regular basis - but at least you have internet there, none of the places in El Panchan do
Rooms are rustic and not entirely bug-proof (I had a room with a fan, not air-con) but when I was there (Nov) there didn't seem to be any mosquitos anyway, so not an issue. Shared bathrooms are a bit dirty. Being right in the jungle you get howler monkeys in the trees right above you. Amazing to be so close but this also means they may keep you awake at night or early mornings. Personally, I thought this was an incredible experience, but be warned they are LOUD! Being in the national park also means you have to take colectivos or taxis into town (and back). The walk to El Panchan take about 15-20 mins, I did it in the pitch dark along the road back and forth a few times without a problem

“Great jungle feel, but a bit noisy.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 November 2011

Maya Bell is rustic place with both cabanas and camping facilities. The restaurant was good, but the staff were not very friendly. Pool looked better at night than during the day. Cabanas near the pool are extremely noisy from pool guests due to the paper thin walls. The Cabanas were rustic nice nothing fancy. Maya Bell is very close to the ruins. It is easy and cheap to catch a collectivo to the ruins or into town.

Room Tip: If you like it quite a night, ask for a Cabana away from the pool and camp ground.

“The perfect place to stay closest to the ruins”

We have stayed here a few times. Always consistent, secure, and comfortable. We always stay in the cabana rooms, but the campground looks great. Pool is huge, great food, music at night, and always an interesting crowd. We ran into 4 bicyclists riding through the Yucatan, Chiapas, then to Central America. We had just come from a month trip driving through Mexico, Belize Guatemala, and had the opportunity to share some info and tips with them. This is what traveling is all about, and the guests here are travelers. One time we have to stay in the tree house!

Room Tip: all the cabana rooms look similar, and all seem fairly quiet, far enough away from the restaurant, s...

“the most terrible experience of our vacation”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 August 2011

awful rooms, dirty, with cockroaches. the bathroom was almost destroyed, nothing was working properly. the pool was dirty and smelling although it was August and they were supposed to have it clean.
staff was rude, arrogant, unwilling to help or give information, even though they knew english they were pretending they didn't. the food was terrible and we had to wait more than half an hour for a beer to be served!!!
it is not the only hotel in the jungle, so they shouldn't promote in as something unique. as travellers we must not get so enthousiastic about a wooden house in the jungle! think twice before choosing it. People like them should not earn money as they do not deserve it!!!
