Without a doubt, this hotel in Palenque or Chiapas is the best hotel in town -- a very tiny village of perhaps 2000 people. It feel like you're at the edge of a jungle, and overall it's a nice hotel with a nice pool and spa.
What I did not like were as follows:
(1) buffet dinners were not good -- they tended to serve leftovers from the previous day and were sometimes cold since they didn't heat it up well. Left over ratatouille vegetables from the night before would be cooked with eggs and served during breakfast. In the 2 nights there, I saw food recycled in various ways or served the way it was the previous time.
(2) in my hotel room, the door to the bathroom fell off the hinges and barely stayed together.
(3) the showers in the bathroom was very inconsistent. As long as no one else was showering in neighboring rooms, you had hot water; otherwise not only would you not have hot water, the water pressure would go from a regular spray to a trickle.
(4) their gym comprises of 2 pieces of equipment behind their spa
They have a spa which is 5-10 minute walk down a cobbled stone path across a wobbly, but charming bridge accompanied by the sounds of howling monkeys (that sound like jaguars roaring).
It's about a 15 minute to the downtown area, and if you're into shopping for handicraft, emboidered goods, this is probably a good place to get them at good prices. Shop around by checking a few stores for pricing before making a purchase as some of the prices will vary greatly. It's safe to walk to town and back. It's about 25 pesos to take a taxi to town.
Despite all the issues with the hotel, there was no other comparable hotel in the village, so this is it in terms of nicest hotel. It's probably comparable with a Holiday Inn or Best Western in the US.
One good bonus is the hotel provides free wireless Internet.
If you're visiting the fabulous Palenque ruins, then I would recommend this place as there's no other 4 star hotel, though it's really a 3 star hotel in my opinion.
