My husband and I had stayed at a Mision hotel in another part of Mexico so we knew what to expect, and this place neither surprised nor disappointed. The hotel is set way off the road along a lush drive, giving it a private feel. The front desk service was a little hit or miss but the bellboy was very friendly and helpful. The room (we stayed in #209 facing the pool) was basic but clean and functional. The shower had great pressure and the hot water came on right away. The bathroom had shelving and lots of space for toiletries. The bed was very firm, even by Mexico standards, due to the fact that it's just a mattress on top of a wooden platform.
The first night we had people in the rooms on both sides of us, and it sounded as if they were in the room with us. We could hear every word they said, and they were up late. The noise combined with the hard bed made it not a great night's sleep. The second night was better since our neighbors had left.
The restaurant was surprisingly good and reasonably priced. The breakfast especially was nice with fruit, eggs, tamales, beans, enchiladas, etc. We were not hungry again until dinner.
Luckily we did not see any tour groups there while we were there. It seemed to be mostly families.
I spent awhile reading reviews on hotels in Palenque trying to find the right one at the right price. None of them seemed all that great. The hotel Mision Palenque was not wonderful, but for the price we paid (762 pesos per night) I can't complain. They could have really ripped us off on the food prices too but they didn't. It was a perfectly average hotel experience.
