After staying in the jungle in Palenque and a budget place in San Cristobal, I didn't mind splurging a bit for the Camino Real at the tail end of the trip. I booked the room in advance on Orbitz and got a rate of only $75. The hotel was nice enough- rooms were clean, beds were comfortable, the pool (that we unfortunately didn't have time to use) looked fantastic. But whereas the Camino Real in other cities (like Monterrey) is hip and well-designed, the CR in Villahermosa was a little ho-hum. I could have been at a Sheraton in Cleveland for all the pizazz it had. We arrived late at night on a Sunday, so we were forced to eat in the hotel restaurant- edible but nothing worth repeating. The location is good, it's not far from all the modern amenities of the Tabasco 2000 area- skip the expensive breakfast buffet and just go to Starbucks down the street. It's also not far from the Parque Museo La Venta, with the big Olmeca heads- definitely worth the visit, but absolutely bring bug spray (and lots of it!). Worth the stay, but only if you can squeeze in some pool time!
