“Functional but lacking in character”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2011

I stayed for a week on business in August, and found the hotel clean, well organised an reasonably efficiently run. I had a room right on the top floor with excellent views over the pool. The room was spacious, clean, the bed comfortable but really I could have been in any corporate hotel anywhere in the world.

The restaurant is particularly unmemorable for food and service, but serves it's purpose for breakfast. Lunch and evening meals were less good - the convenient location (& endless supply of cabs outside the lobby) make it more appealing to go out for dinner, even after a long working day.

One major complaint: the lift system is crazy. On the top floor you may have to wait for five minutes for a lift (seriously - I timed one wait at over 7 minutes!), and of course, often two would then come at once. Annoying if you have someone waiting in the lobby for you, or you are in a rush to get somewhere on time.

Other than that, there's nothing else to complain about, but conversely not much to recommend the Camino Real. For the price, thoroughly average!

“A good price, nice place- but slightly underwhelming.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 September 2009

After staying in the jungle in Palenque and a budget place in San Cristobal, I didn't mind splurging a bit for the Camino Real at the tail end of the trip. I booked the room in advance on Orbitz and got a rate of only $75. The hotel was nice enough- rooms were clean, beds were comfortable, the pool (that we unfortunately didn't have time to use) looked fantastic. But whereas the Camino Real in other cities (like Monterrey) is hip and well-designed, the CR in Villahermosa was a little ho-hum. I could have been at a Sheraton in Cleveland for all the pizazz it had. We arrived late at night on a Sunday, so we were forced to eat in the hotel restaurant- edible but nothing worth repeating. The location is good, it's not far from all the modern amenities of the Tabasco 2000 area- skip the expensive breakfast buffet and just go to Starbucks down the street. It's also not far from the Parque Museo La Venta, with the big Olmeca heads- definitely worth the visit, but absolutely bring bug spray (and lots of it!). Worth the stay, but only if you can squeeze in some pool time!

“A very good hotel at a great price”

I stayed here for four nights on a business trip and was very satisfied with this hotel. The room was very clean and well-appointed with very comfortable beds. The floors are stone or tile throughout, so there are no issues with stinky carpets. The shower had excellent water pressure. The mini-bar was well-stocked and the prices were reasonable.

This hotel is attached to a large modern shopping mall that has a small pharmacy as well as a department store that also has it's own restaurant which means you can go shopping and eat dinner out without having to ever go outside. There is a large grocery store across the street from the hotel.

The food at the hotel restaurant is average. You can get a room rate that includes breakfast or not, but it does not seem to make much difference to the total cost.

The hotel staff at the front desk spoke English well enough. The rest of the staff, including the restaurant folks, do not speak English. The cleaning staff was very friendly and did an excellent job.

My understanding is that this hotel did not suffer any damage in the floods that occurred in Villahermaso a couple of weeks after my stay there.

  • Liked — Clean, well-appointed, attractive decor, tile and stone floors througout
  • Disliked — Food was mediocre

“Real 4 star in Mexico”

We stayed for three nights and had a good experience. The hotel room is large and well equipped. The bathroom was good with a bathtub. We used room service twice and it was great. The pool was refreshing. The hotel is connected to an upscale mall and was a benefit as you could eat at different places. We ate at the hotel restaurant a la carte but not the buffet. I would definitely stay again.

“A disappointing stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 July 2006

We stayed in Vilahermosa for one night on our way back from Palenque. Vilahermosa is a very industrialised town and this hotel seems to cater very much for the business traveller - on arrival the hotel looked lovely with large, impressive public areas which were well air conditioned. The bedrooms are large and nicely decorated but despite everything looking good there seemed to be a general air of disorganisation about the place. We made the mistake of eating in the hotel dining room - the food was fairly terrible and the service was atrocious with the waiter being almost insolent but there didn't seem to be anyone in charge. There seemed to be a lack of management throughout the hotel.
