“Old and 'historic' is not all... to be a good hotel, overprized”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 June 2011

Yes, it is a historic hotel. and needs a complete renovation.
The prices are high, very high.. for the standard you'll be offered.
The hotel ist clean, They try to be friendly, but not really interested, the direcetor, the service,.... friendly but................
For that money..... you get at any place a good value...but not here.

it could be a really good place and superb hotel.....
for the manger of THONHOTELS: Please... do something for this hotel and rescue the wonderfull house.

“An amazing hotel - with lack of facilities”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 July 2010

Location: this hotel is not located in Bergen. It resides in Norheimsund, 70 km from Bergen, right on the shore of HardangerFjord.
Norheimsund is a "central" village with several supermarkets, two restaurants, a pub, a bank and multiple shops.
Hotel's interriors are quite amazing - all are wooden, really old, genuine and stylish! It is difficult to imagine that a country hotel may appear this way. Rooms are large, part of rooms have a kitchen.
The staff is well trained. Breakfast and dinner (dinner is an option - the hotel serves at evening like a restaurant with buffet men;, sometimes there are visitors living outside who come to the hotel for dinner).
The last detail: the hotel is recognized is a part of Norwegian cultural heritage - and it certainly deserves this honor.
Now several interesting facts:
1) No TV in the hotel (a huge advantage to my opinion)
2) No telephones in the hotel. We have had a calling card for international calls with cost like 5c per minute but had to talk by mobile paying $1.50 per minute. Public phones somewhere near are absent.
3) Problematic Internet access because of apparently weak router. It is possible to get connection in parlours, yet in the room (we stayed at second floor) - only night hours.
4) No iron/iron board in the room - and it is not provided. Finally, I was allowed to use iron board intended for personnel.
5) No hair dryer. Please note: bathroom is huge and it is equipped by sophisticated stuff including a heated floor. But a hair dryer - no!
6) No money exchange in the hotel. Please note: the bank is opened till 3:30PM. Bank's ATM does not recognize many of "not Norwegian" credit cards. Mine were not recognized. Then, both the Italian restaurant and many shops do not recognize "not Norwegian" credit cards as well. The result: if one returns after noon from sightseeing and does not have enough cash - it becomes difficult to spend/waste money...
This hotel may easily become the best country hotel in Europe. Namely by this reason I cannot understand how to explain this lack of facilities. The cost to fix all issues listed above in all rooms is like the price for three nights in one "double".
Unfortunately, today it looks like an hotel with the issues, which is intended for a short stay. We ( a family of three) spent there 7 nights and there were problems with both kid's free time and family's everyday functioning - all related to the lack of facilities listed above.
I am quite serious about that "best, most amazing country hotel in Europe" assumption and do not understand why management does not go to achieve major recognition (after fixing issues).

“Charming old-fashioned hotel; good spot to chill out”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 June 2010

The hotel has real character, with a strong sense of history, and an idyllic location.
It is emphatically not like a chain hotel and those who want TV/phone in the room and immaculate decor will be disappointed. But if you want an unusual and charming experience, with friendly service and plenty of peace and quiet, this is a great place to stay.
We had intended to stay in Bergen and could not get rooms. Norheimsund is a 90 min bus trip from Bergen on the 925 bus, which goes every 90 min in the daytime, and stops right outside the hotel. The bus trip is pretty scenic and the Bergen tourist centre will email you a timetable.
Norheimsund is a small town with few facilities. Foodies will be disappointed; the hotel will serve a decent 3 course set menu dinner, but apart from the hotel just a Chinese and Italian restaurant. There are supermarkets. We'd hoped for a boat trip but they weren't on offer while we were there, though we could have spent a whole day on a boat that goes up the fjord and back if we had got up in time for 8.55 start. Seemed to be options for hiking too, though we were just lazy and sat reading and admiring the view.

“Amazing view!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 May 2010

Imagine waking up and seeing the majestic Harderfjord and Flogefonna glacier from your window or balcony! Best sleep I have ever had. Hotel is wonderful, charming and like a museum! Well worth a stay and perfect location for exploring the fjords of the west coast.

“Most charming 150 year-old place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 July 2009

Sandven lies in Norheimsund, along the borders of the Hardangerfjord; the tourist attraction in Western Norway. The hotel license was given by King Oscar I on May 1 1857. Today's main hotel building was built in the Swiss chalet style in 1898 at the harbour of Norheimsund. At the distance the Folgefonna glacier at the other side of the Hardangerfjord complements the scenery.

I have stayed in a room with fjord-view and a large balkony, next door to the Sean Connery and Crown Prince suites. Sean Connery booked once a room in the hotel, but did not show up. Haakon and Mette-Marit, the Norwegian Crown Prince and Princess, did stay at the hotel. The public rooms on the ground floor include the very atmospheric ladies parlour (especially in winter with the fire place burning) and the old banqueting hall. Breathtaking in the banqueting hall are is its rich decorations and stencilled paintings. The food is very nice! As a whole the interior is characterized by classical Norwegian and European antiques, adapted to the flourishing tourist era at the end of the 19th century. The hotel has been redecorated over the past few years, safeguarding the grandeur of the past. It has to be said that some work still needs to be done, but the interior is a pleasure to behold.
