“Excellent choice for a family celebration and reunion”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 September 2011

The Crossways proved to be the perfect venue for a surprise 90th birthday buffet lunch and family reunion weekend.
All the rooms were beautifully decorated, although there are still some budget rooms that still have to be upgraded this is reflected in the price.
There is a relaxed friendly atmosphere in the bar, which has a clean modern appearance.
The staff were fantastic, helpful and provided everything we needed to make a surprise party a success. (They were also helpful when 2 children were taken ill during the night)
The food for the buffet lunch was of very good quantity and quality. Excellent value for money.
All in all the members of the family who stayed there were very pleased and those who came for the buffet lunch all commented on the quality.
We all look forward to meeting there again and seeing yet more of the exciting refurbishment that is taking place

“The perfect choice for a family break”

We booked for just one night as a family of two adults and two children in the standard family room. Our room was lovely! Very well appointed, attractive and cosy with plenty of sleeping space for us and the children - they thought it was brilliant! (not least of which was having two tvs: one for the adult area and one for the them) the bathroom was spotless and very attractive with the best water pressure ever!
The location was perfect for us and made for a quiet and tranquil stay in peaceful and beautiful surroundings. The terrace with its views of Glastonbury Tor is a real gem.
The staff were helpful and friendly, happy to advise us of places to eat locally when we fancied a pub dinner out.
After a very good night's sleep we had a full English breakfast in the very pleasant dining room and again, felt very well looked after by the staff.
I would highly recommend Crossways to anyone looking for the kind of style and attention to detail usually reserved for big City hotels, in a rural, quiet and convenient setting with a friendly family atmosphere. I hope we find the opportunity to go back there.

“Cute Little Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 August 2011

I have stayed at this hotel before and have been going there for six years on business trips. The rooms in the past were ok but have gradually seen massive improvements. In the last two years the bar area and restaurant have been refurbished. Every year they seem to make improvements and the owners have indicated that they have more plans for the future. As this is a family run business the constant upgrades take time. However i can assure all visitors that the hospitality is second to none. I have always been made to feel welcome and my annual visits feel like i'm meeting old friends. I agree the old rooms are drab but the new refurbished rooms are lovely. The old rooms are either going to be refurbished or phased out completely. The hotel is situated quite far away in the countryside and you will definately need a car to get to it. The upside is, that there is no traffic noise at all and the views are wonderful. I have been told that they are looking into building a gym/steam room in the future. The nearest town is Shepton Mallet but i highly ecommend that you visit Wells. This is where they filmed Hot Fuzz. I'll be staying at The Crossways again very soon, for a personal vacation. You must try Sheila's home made apple crumble as it is lush!

Room Tip: Make sure you ask for the new refurbished rooms.

“Disappointed - not as advertised!”

Well I have just looked at the hotel pictures again on their website and I can assure you our room looked nothing like those pictures at all. That is not to say that those rooms do not exist as I believe they do but unfortunately we did not get put in one of them.

The hotel itself was lovely, the reception area smart and the new bar area looked very nice and swanky (as per the pics). Even walking up the stairs to the room all looked good, lovely brand new thick pile carpet along the corridors and the bedroom doors looked nice. Then as the corridor went on, the plush carpet stopped and began a very old fashioned looking carpet, the doors were also just shabby white, my heart sank. I did not fancy opening our door. However we did, although it was clean and the bed actually very comfortable, it was extremely basic, I would probably say a travelodge room is more appealing. The walls were like paper, you could hear absolutely everything through them, thankfully our neighbours did not talk too much and we went back up to the room late so they were already asleep by that point. No toiletries provided (other than hand gel) and I had not taken any shower gel or shampoo as I expect to get these in the room. I think it is a case of they have started doing up the hotel but ran out of money for this part. I know we booked a budget room but I did not expect that they specifically had a run down part of the hotel for this reason. This was our anniversary weekend so I have to say I was disappointed, although tried not to be too much as it was just a bed for the night. The food in the restaurant was nice, although would have been nice to have a sauce with the chicken which was slightly dry. Bar area good fun. There did not seem to be many staff around, ie we had booked a table for dinner but there appeared to be several eating areas, so we were not totally sure which part we were booked in and there did not seem to be anyone to ask.
Breakfast was not very appealing. On offer were a couple of cereals, milk and juice which were in a fridge which you had to hold the plastic tree out of the way to shut the door again and about 4 hot buffet items which I didn't fancy the look of. My husband had those and said they were actually ok. Also there was bread which you could toast.
We were not asked "how was your stay" as I suspect they do not ask anyone in those rooms and reserve that question for the nice rooms. The location is lovely, very quiet. I think if you can be certain you will be staying in the nice room then you will have a lovely stay but if you have no guarantee of that then I would look somewhere else. There are about 4 rooms left in the "dingy" part, so most of them will be the newly done up ones. Don't get me wrong, this wasn't a horrendous stay and I don't want to stop people going there as the place overall seemed nice, we were just unfortunate with our room allocation, though I guess you could say we got a "budget" room and that's what we paid for.
