Well I have just looked at the hotel pictures again on their website and I can assure you our room looked nothing like those pictures at all. That is not to say that those rooms do not exist as I believe they do but unfortunately we did not get put in one of them.
The hotel itself was lovely, the reception area smart and the new bar area looked very nice and swanky (as per the pics). Even walking up the stairs to the room all looked good, lovely brand new thick pile carpet along the corridors and the bedroom doors looked nice. Then as the corridor went on, the plush carpet stopped and began a very old fashioned looking carpet, the doors were also just shabby white, my heart sank. I did not fancy opening our door. However we did, although it was clean and the bed actually very comfortable, it was extremely basic, I would probably say a travelodge room is more appealing. The walls were like paper, you could hear absolutely everything through them, thankfully our neighbours did not talk too much and we went back up to the room late so they were already asleep by that point. No toiletries provided (other than hand gel) and I had not taken any shower gel or shampoo as I expect to get these in the room. I think it is a case of they have started doing up the hotel but ran out of money for this part. I know we booked a budget room but I did not expect that they specifically had a run down part of the hotel for this reason. This was our anniversary weekend so I have to say I was disappointed, although tried not to be too much as it was just a bed for the night. The food in the restaurant was nice, although would have been nice to have a sauce with the chicken which was slightly dry. Bar area good fun. There did not seem to be many staff around, ie we had booked a table for dinner but there appeared to be several eating areas, so we were not totally sure which part we were booked in and there did not seem to be anyone to ask.
Breakfast was not very appealing. On offer were a couple of cereals, milk and juice which were in a fridge which you had to hold the plastic tree out of the way to shut the door again and about 4 hot buffet items which I didn't fancy the look of. My husband had those and said they were actually ok. Also there was bread which you could toast.
We were not asked "how was your stay" as I suspect they do not ask anyone in those rooms and reserve that question for the nice rooms. The location is lovely, very quiet. I think if you can be certain you will be staying in the nice room then you will have a lovely stay but if you have no guarantee of that then I would look somewhere else. There are about 4 rooms left in the "dingy" part, so most of them will be the newly done up ones. Don't get me wrong, this wasn't a horrendous stay and I don't want to stop people going there as the place overall seemed nice, we were just unfortunate with our room allocation, though I guess you could say we got a "budget" room and that's what we paid for.
