“A Real Gem In Port of Spain”

On a fast, week long island hopping trip w/ some friends, our last two days were in Port of Spain. I made lodging inquiries at a number of the big name hotels as well as some of the guest houses in and around Port of Spain. Checking Tripadvisor reviews most of these establishments got generally positive reviews but there were always a few negative ones. There was one exception, The L'Orchidee Boutique Hotel. We took two rooms for two nights and found it to be fabulous. The rooms were large, air conditioned, very clean and well appointed. Our rooms had TV's w/ cable, a small refrig and free wifi. The bathrooms were also large, nicely tiled and there was always plenty of hot water. There's a cozy outdoor patio where we sat in the mornings enjoying coffee, and afternoons enjoying a beer or glass of wine. The L'Orchidee is located a couple of blocks off Queen's Park Savannah in a quiet neighborhood yet is convenient to all of Port of Spain. The staff, to a person, was simply the best! Friendly, always available and accommodating, whatever we needed was taken care of quickly and professionally. The staff struck me as being truly interested in their guests, anticipated there needs (beach towels before we asked) and they also know a lot about what's happening on Trinidad and in Port of Spain. L'Orchidee provides its guests w/ breakfast which included eggs, pastries, fruits, juices, fresh coffee and tea and a number of other items all lovingly prepared by Chef Katelin. She made everything from scratch each morning and if you wanted something special (which we did) she cheerfully made it happen. The dinning room is small and intimate, an excellent place for us to start our mornings. If you want to have dinner at the hotel (which we did) we simply made our selection in the afternoon and told the staff what time we wanted to eat. At the appointed time, the Chef (yes, the Chef) served dinner and drinks...its that small and intimate.
Upon arrival we needed a car and driver for our stay and by the time we had unpacked we were introduced to Dominic Drayton, and his new air conditioned van. Dominic is a great (patient and mellow) driver who navigates POS in a relaxed manner. Ask for him if you need a car/taxi/driver...he's the best.
Let me just say, Sherryanne, L'Orchidee's Manager will make sure your stay at L'Orchidee will be one you will remember for a long time. I don't think you could find a better place to stay in Port of Spain.

“Exceeded my expectations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 March 2009

This hotel exceeded my expectations. Location was perfect - walking distance to the Savannah. I was impressed with the cleanliness and beauty of the premises, it actually did not have that 'hotel' smell - just clean and spotless. Loved, loved the breakfast - I asked for an exotic Trini breakfast - and got it! Food was delicious. I felt very comfortable with the 24 hr security. It is a 'boutique' hotel so expect the rooms to be smaller, but the large bathroom made up for the smaller sized room. Most of all, I was impressed with the staff - they were friendly, eager to please, very respectful and I'll give top marks for service. I will stay here again, anytime, and I highly recommend it to business travelers, friends and honeymooners.

“Nice place, amazing customer service!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 March 2009

Had a pleasant two night stay at L'Orchidee while we went to the cricket. Christine, the manager, is awesome! She is really friendly and went well beyond the call of duty to help us. She drove us around Port of Spain after she was supposed to have finished for the day, chasing around so we could buy tickets for the next day's play. All done with a smile! The other staff were really nice as well.

The rooms are nice, nothing special, but well done out. Breakfast was really good and the servers there were also really friendly.

Only downside for us was we were in a downstairs room which was fairly near the kitchen, so you could hear them preparing for breakfast quite early. Not a major deal as we wanted to get to the cricket early anyway.

St Anns is a nice neighborhood - we walked around at night on our own and didn't feel threatened. We also were able to walk across the Savannah to the cricket each day, again no worries.

Thought the price was slightly steep for the quality of rooms etc but think it still compared favourably with other places in Port of Spain given it was a peak period.

Would definitely stay again and try for an upstairs room next time.

“Gives the 'hotel stalwarts' a run for their money...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 March 2009

I am very familiar with Trinidad and Tobago. Apart from previously living there, I've stayed in various local hotels for business trips. I decided on L'Orchidee when I was unable to get a booking at the Kapok Hotel for Carnival. It exceeded my expectations! Granted, it is difficult to extrapolate one's experience during Carnival week to other times of the year, but suffice it to say, if I return to T&T for subsequent Carnivals, L'Orchidee will be my first choice.

While it is not a "luxury" accommodation, L'Orchidee is quaint, tastefully designed, and a cut above other local hotels in terms of cleanliness and customer service. All rooms are air-conditioned, tiled (which I prefer over carpet), and are equipped with ceiling fans, mini-fridge, telephone, cable TV, and wireless internet access. I was very pleased with the bathroom, as well (the hot water was nice and piping hot!)

Unfortunately, crime is a major concern in T&T, but I felt safe while staying at L'Orchidee. The property is fenced, there is always a security guard on site, and the main entrance is security-controlled from the reception desk.

Location is also A+, as it is within walking distance of the Queen's Park Savannah, yet tucked away from all the traffic noise! There is also a supermarket (Hi-Lo) and green grocer within a five-minute walk.
