I just had to write a brief review, having just returned from six days at Drumoig Golf Hotel. My wife and I were staying there for a golf competition she was playing in on one of the St Andrews courses and Drumoig offered a good value alternative and only 10-15 minutes drive away from St Andrews itself. We stayed in one of their Executive rooms which are on the first floor of the main hotel building and it was good value at £99 a night B&B. The room was newly decorated and huge, with two comfy sofas, a 36" LCD TV with Freeview and DVD player, radio/CD system and a Juliette balcony looking out onto the 18th green. The bathroom was also huge with two sinks, a spa bath and separate shower.
The welcome we received was very warm and not overpowering like you get from some hotels.
Breakfast was very good in the buffet style and had everything you'd need, but if you're used the a bewildering range of cold meats like you get in some hotels then you'll be disappointed. Plenty of different cereals, yoghurt, grapefruit etc, and a selection of hot food including potato scone, sausage, bacon, black pudding, scrambled egg, tomatoes, beans and mushrooms. As much as you can eat really and all of a very high quality - and freshly prepared every morning!
We ate at the hotel three times and the food was very good, with service to match and the bar prices are very reasonable. You won't find haut cuisine here, just good honest food at reasonable prices - Burger & Chips, steak pie, curry, chilli, lemon sole, steak, salads, bakes potatoes etc etc...
We only managed to play the course once, but were very impressed with it. Maintenance was top notch and the layout is very interesting with lots of challenges for everyone.
To call Drumoig a 'Golf Resort' is slightly misleading. Yes, the hotel and the course are excellent, but don't expect beauty treatments and a pro shop. It's a hotel with a golf course. if you want any more then you'll have to go down the road to St Andrews and pay the hefty premium for doing so.
We left the hotel feeling totally relaxed. There's nothing you can put your finger on, it's just the layout of the place, the relaxed way in which stuff just gets done by the members of staff and the great location. I can't think of a better place to stay for golfers in this area, unless of course you have unlimited amounts of cash!
With so much to see and do within a 15 mile radius of this hotel we would definitely recommend it to anyone and would certainly like to return.
Room Tip: Go for the Executive rooms in the main hotel if you really want luxury. Room 28 was the pick of the...
