We stayed at this hotel for three nights. It seems that most people who stay there are either Norwegian or German senior citizens.
The airline had lost our bags, so we were rather frustrated upon arrival. We were told that the only available rooms were in the side building, and if we wanted a good room in the main building, we should wait a few hours. We did, and the receptionist gave us a large, good room to be nice to us. Or so she said. The room was by no means large, the bathroom was very old and outdated, not to mention dirty. I was surprised, as the hotel web site claims that the hotel was refurbished in 2006. They must have changed a door someplace in the hotel, and that was it. I've never seen so much dust before in a hotel room, and it was smelly.
I complained to the front desk, and was told that this was indeed the most modern room they had. I then asked them to send housekeeping up to clean it, but housekeeping had left for the day (this was 3 pm). She proceeded to give us another room, which appeared to be a family room as it had one king bed and one twin. It was larger, brighter, cleaner and a tad bit more modern. It still wasn't up to what I consider to be reasonable hotel standards of cleanliness though. To be fair, though, both rooms did have nice views.
Breakfast was included, and consisted of an ok assortment of food. The eggs were all way overcooked though, and upon asking for a softboiled egg, it turned out that the person asked had pretended to understand the question, but seeing as she didn't speak the language, she hadn't understood anything. After waiting 20 minutes for the softboiled egg, a member of the staff came over and asked if we were the people who wanted milk in our coffee.
The standard of this hotel cannot from an objective point of view justify the price. However, it's almost impossible to get a room, so I guess business is good.
Would we stay there again? I certainly hope we won't have to, but there are only two "decent" hotels in Kirkenes; this one and Rica Arctic Hotel. I think I would check out Rica Arctic to see if that one's better, but if it's not, there's not much choice.
