“Beautiful Big Sur!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

We loved this campground and we loved Big Sur! We rented an RV site for our 36 foot motorhome. It was a little tight backing into our site but the camper across from us was nice enough to move his truck. The river running through the campsite was beautiful. My husband and kids rented tubes and floated down the freezing river. They also dove off the rocks. We didn't have a car so we hiked 5 miles down to the ocean. Very nice, easy hike and you end up seeing where the river meets the ocean - very cool! I live in Southern California and was so impressed and in awe of the beautiful coastline of Northern California! On our drive up we also stopped to take a look at the elephant seals that hang out on the beach. You have to look them up online, it was a highlight of our trip!

“burglarized in Big Sur”

The cabins are nice, and by the river. Very cozy. BUT BEWARE!!! My girl friend and I stayed at Big Sur Campgrounds and Cabins for New Years this year. On our second day, while we were out exploring, my guitar was stolen from our cabin. We had locked the door behind us, but when we came back the door was open from the cleaning crew and my guitar was gone. When we reported it stolen, the owner did nothing about it. She did not offer to compensate me for the loss. She did not even offer to refund the price of our stay. Goodbye $600 guitar, goodbye Big Sur Campgrounds and Cabin!

“Beautiful campsite, great facilities”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

We very much enjoyed camping at Big Sur Campground and Cabins. We went off-season in January so the cost was a little less but still expensive as far as campsites go. However, I will point out that since it is not in a National/State park there is no car entry fee, there are great bathroom facilities with sinks, flushing toilets (toilet paper) and hot showers (the showers are free, folks!) as well as a place to do laundry (coin operated) - not to mention you are at a prime location in Big Sur for hikes - so it was worth the price for us. And really, what do you expect in a secluded area where the gas prices on Highway 1 are $5+?

Our drive-in campsite was very private, well kept and simply beautiful. Each site comes with a table and fire pit (the fire pits have grills as well - helpful to know so you don't have to bring your tripod). The ground is a mixture of wood chips and soil, there were minimal rocks at our site, so it was quite comfortable at night. We still used our yoga mats and sleeping pads for extra protection from the cold ground.

Campers beware: the "mascot" of Big Sur Campground and Cabins is the raccoon for very good reason. We had a raccoon sneak up to our table while we were eating and take an entire sealed loaf of bread from right in front of us. He was not vicious, just food-driven and was obviously not afraid of us in the least because he chose to plop himself down off our site a mere 8-10 feet away from us to begin to chow down. Of course we cleaned up his mess the following morning before we left.

Also just have to give a nod of thanks to the staff. They were beyond kind, helpful and very friendly. They offered us free coffee while they had office hours and gave great recommendations for hikes in the area. Thank you!

Room Tip: We chose site 7 right along the Big Sur River, it was gorgeous.

“Into the past”

It was such a refreshing few days to be in the forest away from the city. The site was great and had everything we needed for our tent, fire, table, and bathrooms. I saw a deer one morning walking through the site and got a picture. There are good trails all around and people were friendly and calm when we went there. Once again I really enjoyed the peacefulness and the fresh air in this camping spot.

“Great family lodging among giant trees”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 December 2011

Big Sur Campground offers a few cabins for lodging, in addition to the traditional campground for tent and RV camping. We stayed in cabin C, which is an A-frame cabin with full kitchen / dining / double bed, and two lofts with twin beds in each. The campground is right on a small creek, with inner tubes for rent.

The campground is right on Highway 1, and in the most scenic area of Hwy 1 in California. We used it as our base for visiting the Big Sur area, Carmel, and Monterey.

The pricing is not cheap, our room approaching nearly $400 / night. Even though we had an enjoyable visit, I considered the price to be out of line with the rest of our California visit (this was the most expensive place and we stayed in San Francisco for much less). However, it was one of the few lodging options in the area that accepted a family with teenagers. Many of the lodging options in / around Big Sur are adults only.

The staff at this campground were among the most friendly people we encountered during our stay. They always greeted us warmly, had helpful tips and information about the area, and made us feel like they really enjoyed seeing us. This made our stay quite pleasant and comfortable.

Even though the price was high, we would definitely consider coming here again.

Room Tip: We were told by the staff that Cabin C is the biggest / best of the cabins in the campground.
