“Decent Option in Big Sur”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

Fernwood Resort offers a very competitive price in Big Sur, so the four adults in our party decided to try out the motel accommodations for a night. We rented one "room" that had a king and two twins, with a little door that separated the two sleeping areas (great option for those traveling with a couple and two singles)

Positive Points:
- The motel is steps away from a charming little country store with the basics and a grill with good food / drinks / games to play.
- The staff is great - friendly, knowledgeable, made you feel at home
- Clean

Points for improvement:
- We paid $20 extra for a room with a gas fireplace and that ended up being our only source of heat. Which wouldn't have been bad except it was in the 30s and the fireplace broke - three times. The staff had to come to our room three different times to fix the fireplace, before finally giving us the heater from their office (which shut off in the middle of the night) and refunding the extra $20.
- Thin walls

When all is said and done, go ahead and give this place a try - the fireplace could have just been a fluke and what motel in the woods doesn't have thin walls? The lack of heat, television and a place to hang out in our room pushed us to the Grill, where we had dinner and had a great time playing games for the evening (provided by the grill). Just know going in that what you pay in Big Sur does not buy what it would in other parts of California. But hopefully if you do have a problem while staying here the staff will be as helpful as they were to us.

“Loved it!”

We had a nice room with a fireplace and a private hot tub on the back deck. The room was very reasonably priced for this area and clean. It was small but nice. The back deck and hot tub was wonderful. If you go ask for a room with a private hot tub. Nice and well worth it. As some others have posted the walls are very thin.

Room Tip: Get a room with a private deck and hot tub.

“In the woods”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 December 2011 via mobile

The motel was like a semi rustic country cottage. It was cute but lacks some city comfort like an effective heating system. To be expected on the big sur

“Not bad”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2011

We stayed here for one night in October. Big Sur seemed to be a very expensive place to visit so this seemed a decent price.

We had a motel room for 4 and it was alright. Walls aren't very thick so I knew exactly when our neighbour got up and had a shower, and the rooms were pretty basic. Wooden floors got a bit slippy if you were in socks and the shower was more of a warm trickle but the towels were clean and the beds were clean and comfortable. You're here for the surroundings anywathey right? so it was nice to to able to have a walk by the river through the woods, although it is fenced off so you can't go too far.

We ate in the restaurant, which was excellent food and had a couple of drinks in the bar afterwards. Breakfast was in the store, which had a good selection and good cappucino. Just not much room to sit but there are seats outside too.

Overall, I'd be happy to spend another night here on my next PCH trip.

“Nice place...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 October 2011

We stayed here one night for a music event. We wanted to be able to just walk back to our room after the show. We did not stay in one of the cabins, but in one of the motel rooms. The rooms was clean and rustic, with no tv or telephone. But who needs tv or phones when you're in beautiful Big Sur? The general store is pretty cool. They have a good assortment of all kinds of things. We hung out in the tavern all night ordering drinks and food until the show started. They had a bbq that night, and the food was really good. The prices were very fair. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. The show was awesome and we had a lot of fun! We even got to meet the band we came to see. The price for the room was very reasonable. We paid $150 for the queen bedroom w/ a hot tub, on a Saturday. It was a good experience.
