Fernwood Resort offers a very competitive price in Big Sur, so the four adults in our party decided to try out the motel accommodations for a night. We rented one "room" that had a king and two twins, with a little door that separated the two sleeping areas (great option for those traveling with a couple and two singles)
Positive Points:
- The motel is steps away from a charming little country store with the basics and a grill with good food / drinks / games to play.
- The staff is great - friendly, knowledgeable, made you feel at home
- Clean
Points for improvement:
- We paid $20 extra for a room with a gas fireplace and that ended up being our only source of heat. Which wouldn't have been bad except it was in the 30s and the fireplace broke - three times. The staff had to come to our room three different times to fix the fireplace, before finally giving us the heater from their office (which shut off in the middle of the night) and refunding the extra $20.
- Thin walls
When all is said and done, go ahead and give this place a try - the fireplace could have just been a fluke and what motel in the woods doesn't have thin walls? The lack of heat, television and a place to hang out in our room pushed us to the Grill, where we had dinner and had a great time playing games for the evening (provided by the grill). Just know going in that what you pay in Big Sur does not buy what it would in other parts of California. But hopefully if you do have a problem while staying here the staff will be as helpful as they were to us.
