We spent 3 nights at the Big Sur Lodge in January. We stayed in one of the lodge 2-bedroom "cabins" which are really a string of suites connected in several low buildings located up the hill in the redwoods. Being the off season, we got a great rate. You can also book through the pelicannetwork to get a deal. We paid $190 for the 2-bedroom suite, which was an okay deal. I would definitely NOT pay the rack rate posted on the door ($399). When I asked the front desk, they said they never charge that much anyway. The location is superb, near hiking, waterfalls, beaches and the accomodations looked to fill a "mid-range" market between the low end rooms right on Hwy 1 and the incredibly luxurious accomodations at places like Post Ranch. The room was comfortable and basic - renovated bathroom, extra sink in the 2nd bedroom, small fridge, coffee maker. No TV/wifi/phone for a "get away from it all" experience. The room was very quiet, but we had few neighbors so I can't speak to the soundproofing. We ate several breakfasts and dinners in the restaurant. The food was well-prepared and a decent choice. The kitchen is slow, however, and I wonder how they would do if the lodge had been fuller. Perhaps they were short staff being off-season? I would definitely go back if I were in the neighborhood.
