My Husband and I came here as part of our road trip honeymoon from San Francisco to Los Angeles last August. It was really lovely - our room was on the other side of the road, so it was a bit cheaper but we preferred this because it meant we were slightly tucked away. We didn't notice the road at all and spent most of the evening sat with our toes dipped in the stream at the back of the restaurant. It was idyllic and just what we were looking for. The area is pricey over all so this was a great deal - . I would definitely recommend it. The food was great, the staff were really friendly, even when I locked us out of the motel room twice! There is a lovely little gift shop and a convenience store for picking up supplies before going exploring. In a rural, rustic setting I can't imagine what more people would expect. Thank you Big Sur River Inn for making our honeymoon just perfect!

“Idyllic retreat.”

My husband and I decided to overnight at this motel following a very hearty meal (and a few Margueritas) in their charming restaurant. As the restaurant (and parts of the motel I believe) was temporarily closing for a scheduled deep clean the very next morning (breakfast/room service therefore not available) we were given a really great deal for the night of our stay.
Also, as we had Skype calls to make that evening and a Wifi signal was absolutely essential for our stay we were upgraded to one of their enormous riverside suites overlooking the garden (where the signal is strongest) - complete with a comfy king size bed, extra day bed/sofa, full bath with shower over and outside table and chairs. Luckily we were able to get a Wifi signal seated in one of the large armchairs inside the suite - by the door. (There is no signal in the motel chalets on the opposite side of the road apparently).
We'd arrived after dark and there wasn't much to see that evening, however we were really blown away by the stunning location and setting of our riverside suite in the morning! We were also greeted by some charming and rather playful, exotic looking blue birds hopping down from the giant Redwoods onto the handrail of the raised porch/walkway right outside our door. The suite's elevated position with views over the beautiful redwood garden - complete with wooden lounge chairs dotted around and carefully positioned in the shallows of the water gave for a rather idyllic scene! We spent an enjoyable morning lazing around the garden and browsing in the eclectic gift shop next to the restaurant before heading off into the Big Sur again. Definitely going back again!

Room Tip: If you can afford it choose the riverside suites - beautiful setting overlooking the garden and Wifi...

My bf and I went up to big sur for our anniversary (new years weekend) I've never been . I called everywhere looking for a room and everywhere was booked besides big sur river inn. I wasn't happy with spending 185 dollars on a room for one night with no tv,no wifi, and no service but had choice. But the room was nice very clean and had own good size bathroom. Across the street there's a restaurant (didn't eat at) also a general store plus burrito bar (terrible) and make Ur pizza. Also cute little stores. And there's a really pretty creek in the back with wooden chairs we sat at. I would reccomend this place if u dont mind no tv wifi or service cause it's really clean.

“Surprise”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2011

Walking into our room was the first surprise, how could they justify $189 for what was an up market garden shed clean but very basic with a bath that was the size of a shower tray. The heater worked but thankfully it was not a cold night. The food in the restaurant was OK but expensive with mediocre service, and refused service the second night due to a pre-booked party. Five motels/restaurants later we found a store to buy food, don't these Big Sur people like tourists. Finally there was no one around at 8:00 to help with the checkout. A poor experience of American hospitality.

“Clean and Comfortable”

This was our first trip to Big Sur and thus no other accommodations to compare to in the area. The rooms were big enough (No TVs or Wifi – and no cell service either) and VERY clean. Hopefully you are not there to spend a lot of time in your room, however. We were during the off-season and prices were still a little on the high side for what you are getting, so I’d imagine it is for sure overpriced during the busy season. Now, the restaurant and outdoor patio do have Wifi service and the food is decent, but far from great. It was been a long standing opinion of mine that most restaurants that have beautiful settings, don’t try as hard on the food….and that is certainly the case here. The staff is friendly enough, if not borderline indifferent. Overall opinion is the same as their service to their guests…no real horror stories and could take it or leave it.
