“Terrific weekend get-away. Perfecto!”
We live in Atlanta, GA and recently it snowed. Only a few inches, but according to the southern standards it was enough to lock the city down for 3 full days and nights. It was cold, we had cabin fever, we needed to get out of there... a short trip to sunny mexico was just what the doctor ordered. We got a GREAT deal on a last minute direct flight from Atlanta and found Rancho on Trip Advisor. Let me just tell you, there is a reason why they are number 1.
Check in/ Guest services- Easy and wonderful. Hilda, Mr. Valente and the rest of the staff are pleasant and incredibly helpful. Mercedes speaks english fluently and she gives a great tour of the B&B and the neighboorhood, answering all questions and assuring youre comfortable. There is always at least one person available who speaks english well enough to help you. However, with a few key words in spanish, hand gestures and an animated face- you can pretty much get your point across.
Rooms- I hesitate to call this no-frills because the view from our room was far from average. If you're looking for luxury accomodations, this is not the place for you but if youre used to B&B's, and/or modest international travel, then you will love it. Swinging beds were not plush but there is something very soothing about being rocked to sleep at night. Everything was immaculately clean, beds were made daily and youre given the option of new towels everyday. The 5 gallon dispenser of water in the room was necessary for both tooth brushing and drinking, so is was nice to have it there. The hammocks on the balcony were NO JOKE INCREDIBLE. I read an entire book swinging in that hammock. And there are 2 per room! no waiting!! I traveled with my mother and our family friend, we stayed in room 11 and there was enough room for all 3 of us to stretch out and be comfortable.
Food- Breakfast at the B&B was absolutely amazing. The fresh fruit, yogurt, muffins, pastries, jams, and cereal were terrific. The option to prepare your own eggs was an added bonus but the true STAR of our morning was the big old juicer and huge bowl of fresh juicing oranges. FRESH SQUEEZED JUICE Y'ALL. outstanding. Kitchen is open all day so feel free to bring back leftovers or groceries to make your own lunch.
Must Do's- The town of Puerto Morelos is the host of at least twelve moderately priced restaurants that are walking distance from the hotel. It's a leisurely 12 minute walk to town.
- The port is a must see. Fisherman pull in at around 1pm with the days catch. Elbow your way to the front to get a whole fresh snapper for about $4 USD! they will gut, scale, filet etc... right in the boat. Cook it up in the shared kitchen with spices that Rancho provides.
- There is a shack type stand in that square where for $3.50 USD we FEASTED on a grilled 1/2 chicken, beans, rice, salad and tortillas. I dont remember the name of it, but follow your nose and ask the locals.
- El Verde Green is a new vegetarian restaurant that CANNOT be missed. make a right at the chicken shack and keep going another 2 blocks. we had a smoothie here that not only had us return the next day, but has forced my mother to purchase a papaya hoping to remake the delicious concoction.
- Now this is going to sound strange... but there is one man who really made our trip even more outstanding. His name is Jorge and he is the only Puerto Morelos local who has blonde hair and blue eyes. Everyone knows who he is and if you ask for him, they will either tell you where he is or send him looking for you. I know it sounds creepy, but the town is so small that just a description of your clothes will have Jorge at your side within the hour. Jorge runs his own tours in the area and knows every bit of history about Puerto Morelos. He is incredible, INCREDIBLE. He took us to the cenotes, a fresh water underground pool in the caves near Puerto Morelos. We snorkled and had a great time. He is friendly, efficient, personable and trustworthy. He was born in Mexico city but spent enough time in the United States to be bilingual and hip to both cultures. The best part is that he's willing to work a personalized tour around the needs of your group. Do yourself a favor and ask for the blonde man named Jorge.
Representation- The thing that I respected the most was the accurate representation of this hotel on it's website. There is no trick, no getcha. The pictures are accurate, the information is accurate, no hidden charges. ask them which rooms are best for you, they will tell you.
We cannot WAIT to go back to Rancho. It was an incredible weekend.
