We just returned from a week long stay at Ocean Coral Torquesa. Before we went we did lots of investigating online and I have to say it was exactly as it has been reviewed. Some very good aspects and some not so great aspects. I gave the resort 4 stars but I think it was really between 3 and 4. So here is my review.
The resort is very clean and they seem to take pride in keeping everything maintained well. While we were there a water line broke off premises which shut off the water to our resort for the majority of a day. Not a big deal, but the resort never notified us of the problem, not fliers under our door or posted notices. Not until I called the front desk was I told what was going on.
The entertainment staff, housekeeping, bartenders, hostesses, and wait staff were attentive, friendly, and really made our stay. The front desk staff are dry and do not provide much information. We were corralled by the timeshare people right as we checked in. She (Sadie) was very friendly telling us about the resort and where to find restaurants, etc. As soon as she started talking about the time share I told her we were not interested and her attitude immediately changed and she was very rude. Not a very pleasant first impression. We were told at this time that the a la carte restaurants did not require a reservation, which is true...however if you would like to sit at a teppan table in the Japanese restaurant this is not true, you do need a reservation for that - a little detail they failed to provide at our introduction.
On the subject of food we found it to be decent, not gourmet, but definitely edible. Mike's coffee shop is fantastic, the Mexican and Italian restaurant were both fairly good, and the buffet provided a variety of options all the time. The drinks were always tasty and pretty strong for an all inclusive.
We booked a snorkling excursion through the hotel that took us to Puerto Morelos for half a day. The snorkeling itself was very nice we saw sea turtles, sting ray, lobster, eel, several varieties of fish - just a really good snorkeling spot. Unfortunately through Ocean lunch was not included in the trip, again no big deal but every other group on the excursion was given lunch while we just sat around waiting. Would have been nice if we would have known to take extra cash to buy our own lunch. We made the best of it by walking around the town centre, but just a bit annoying.
Our room was very nice and clean. We were in building 19 which was quite far from everything, but we are able bodied so no issue there. The bed was terrible...hardest, more uncomfortable mattress I have ever slept on. Really that would be my biggest complaint. Also they only give you two bottles of water in the room each day. We worked out every morning and also made coffee so our water was gone before our day even really started. Easy to get water at the various restaurants and bars but would have been nice to have more in the room. Our room had a nice view of the ocean, we never had problems with a musty smell, and it was nice a cool all the time. The first shower we took resulted in water all over, but we just turned the shower head and it didn't happen again.
For the price, I think this resort is really worth it, just be aware that it is not perfect. I think we would return here again because it was an inexpensive vacation that met our expectations.
