“Magic in Magic Canillo”

I went for Holidays February 2009. Not a skier but for relaxation.

Well, great hotel for its price first of all. It is located on a hill to the right, over Canillo, very pretty and within close range 1km driving to the Ski lifts to the Ski resort (can't walk-steep uphill climb). Very close to paths for walks up the mountain.
A car in necessary 100%, but it also allows for more scenic drives around Andorra. The rooms were clean, the breakfast was nice, the pool was relaxing while internet and parking was available (free), If you want a garage (not recommended) then you pay extra. I say park on the road a bit further up.
Very very nice clean, mountain style rooms.

Would definately recommend it. I found it through the internet and got a better price. Do the same.

“Do not stay here unless you have a car”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 February 2009

This hotel is set up the mountain from the village of Canillo. They only have 2 small buses to take people down to the gondola every day and they don't start until 8:45 so the queue was huge. There was lots of pushing and shoving going on when the buses arrived and we didn't get up to the mountain until mid-morning every day. The same on the return journey, we had to queue for an hour in the freezing cold to catch the bus back to the hotel. They stop one of the buses at 5 o'clock, their busiest time, and only have an 8 seater bus to transport all their guests back to the hotel. There is no other means of getting back to the hotel unless you walk, which is a considerable distance, so going for a beer to warm you up is also out of the question.
There are no taxis in Canillo, if you want a taxi they have to come in from Andorra La Vella and you have to pay the cost of that journey so its 20 euro before you go anywhere. The hotel are very unsympathetic to you wanting to leave the hotel at night as well and we found they were unwilling to help.
All of this wouldn't have been too bad if the hotel was great, however the staff in the bar were very unfriendly to the point of being rude and the food was awful.
If you do end up at this hotel on a Ski holiday, I feel sorry for you, however if you get ready early and get the bus back into town before it finishes at 6 pm you can then get the ski bus to another resort. We went to Soldeu which actually had apres ski and a lovely feel to it. A warning though taxis are hard to find and half of us got back to the hotel OK, the other half of us had to hitch a lift because it was after 10 and there were no taxis on the streets.

“Would not recommend”

Where shall i start... we arrived as a group of seven on a skiing trip at the beginning of march 08.

We were given our room cards and directed to where we were staying, on route to the room it was obvious that a school trip was staying here also, and there were children running around everywhere - very noisy.

We were staying on a self catering basis, but in a four star hotel you would still expect to get your room cleaned, and your sheets changed at least once in seven days. THIS IS NOT THE CASE - SELF CATERING MEANS SELF CATERING AT THE MAGIC CANILLO.

In the week that we stayed we did not get:
1) The room cleaned
2) The sheets were not changed
3) No clean towels in the whole week
4) No toilet rolls

Considering you need to shower every day after coming in from the slopes, it is so unhygenic using the same towel for a week!!!

The worst part of staying at this hotel is... If it snows do not expect the hotel to clear the roads, or grit the paths.

The snow fell for two days solid, and the hotel did not make any arrangements for the road outside to be ploughed, or gritted. As the hotel is half way up a mountain, this should be a priority, otherwise you cannot go anywhere. We had a transit van, but could not get it out of the garage - so we were stuck in the hotel for one night, and the only option of food was to eat in irish bar (snack food). Or pay 18 euros each to eat in the buffet restaurant (it stunk of fish)!!!

We parked the our van outside on the road the hotel told us that we need to park it in the garage so we were not blocking access (thats ok for them to say they then charge 18 euros a night for parking) - which we refused to pay.

The hotel did put on a little bus one day to get us to the bottom of the mountain, but then informed us that we would have to make our own way back. We had to walk in the blizzarding snow up the mountain for nearly 1hr 45 mins back up to the hotel on the evening. Needless to say we were all frozen!
I find it shocking that a hotel in a ski resort does not have the facilities to clear the snow for guest's who want to leave the hotel!!!!

We all wish i had stayed in a hotel in the valley and not on the mountain, the only good thing about this hotel is the view.

“Good and Bad Magic”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 February 2008

Stayed with my teenage son for 4 nights, Hotel is modern, clean and finished to a high standard, the pool and spa are excellent too. What is not good is the food, after 2 nights we gave up and drove our hired car to soldeu to eat, the breakfast is ok but the evening buffet is diabolical, without a hired car there is very little in canillo, and the hotel is way up the mountain making a visit to town impractical. I complained to reception and received a discount for the meals we did not eat.
The hotel guests are mainly spanish, a few english and russians. My advice if booking- go for bed and breakfast and hire a car to eat out, better still go to soldeu or pas de casa as these towns have some decent bars and restaurants. The parking is very limited near the hotel and they charge 18 euros per day to park, the ski lockers are free and you need a cap to swim - 3 euros.
The lift pass is expensive too, 167 euros for 5 days making Andorra very expensive with the mountain snack bars charging 6 euros for an uncooked burger and 3 euros for a small beer.

“Great Stay”

I would recomend the Magic Canillo, nice clean modern hotel with a great Bar and lovely (smallish) swimming pool etc. Rooms were clean and modern with free use of the safe.
The hotel has free Ski lockes within the car park ($18 per day ! )
To get to the hotel you drive up a steepish road, past the gondolla, then turn off and down a 100mtr rd to the Hotel. Easy to get to and from EXCEPT if you get heavy snow. If Snow is imminemt either use the Hotel Car park of park at the top of the road which leads to the Hotel.
Last Saturday the road was full of grumpy people trying to get up the slope after spending 3 hrs digging their cars out from under 2' of snow.
Ensure that you take snow chains.
