“WORST VACATION EVER!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

If you're looking for a cheap vacation to Cuba then by going to Club Amigo Mayanabo you have sure found one. I had the displeasure of going to this resort in August of 2011 with my husband, sister and niece. Like you, the person reading my review, I too came to Trip Advisor in hopes of learning more about this location before committing to the trip. I found some negative reviews but mostly positive ones therefore making the determination that this would be the location of our vacation to Cuba. For the price we wouldn't go with 5 star expectations of course but go with an open mind and hope for the best.

When we got there boy were we disappointed. Firstly it was a hellish one hour drive from the airport to reach the resort on a bus that was being driven by a speed demon so we wondered if we were going to arrive alive to even enjoy some type of a vacation. We finally got to the resort and were excited to get to our room to get our stuff put away so we could enjoy some drinks. There was one person at the front desk that spoke english and a whole busload of people trying to check in. When we arrived at the resort they told us to leave our luggage at the front desk and to hurry to the restaurant because they kept it open just for us so we needed to hurry so we could eat and they could get the dining room cleaned up. It was 9:30 we later discovered they closed at 9 which we thought was pretty early. We got in to the restaurant and it smelled terrible which we quickly discovered that it smelled like this the entire week we were there. Makes it quite appetizing to eat there. We approached the buffet and just about vomited. Options like tongue and some funky hot dog looking things in water didn't really appeal to us. Long story short, we lost about 10 pounds each during this vacation. The snack bar was only open until 4 pm every day so their advertising about 24 hour food and drink was a pile of baloney and a hugely false advertisement. The only good thing that came out of the snack bar that wasn't questionable was the french fries. We had a lot of those that week.

After being so disgusted and disappointed with the food quality and selection and coming to the realization that this is what we were faced with for an entire week we went back to the front desk to check in. So we got checked in and the porter took us to our room which seemed like 3 city blocks away. We walked into our room and my sister and niece had the room a couple doors down from us and we took a look around and immediately both my husband and I walked out of the room disgusted and found my sister and niece in the hall as well gagging from the smell in their room. Our room smelled like urine big time and in the shower were a million little bugs crawling around. There was no balcony or ability to open a window in the room. We said forget it and went to the front desk and demanded to be put in another room. We refused to be stuck in that room for a week. We requested an upgrade to ocean front but were informed that all that block was under renovation and no rooms available. Funny because the following weekend when the Cubans came and over ran the resort that's where they were all staying. So we said we wanted to upgrade to a better room and were told that it was very expensive to do that. We informed him that we didn't care that we would not stay in the rooms we were put in and would pay for the upgrade. It cost an extra $70 USD for the week and we got a suite (still without a balcony and outdated) that was far better than the initial room we had been put in although on the last day we found a cockroach in our bathtub and my sister and niece had about 4 or 5 cockroaches in their room through the week. I sometimes wonder if they do this on purpose to get the people to come and pay for an upgrade.

After putting our stuff away we went down to have a couple of drinks and unwind from our travels. The main bar closed at 11. We then needed to go down to some cheesy little piano bar they called it which was dark and smelled nasty and didn't have a piano by the way to have some drinks. The drinks were the nastiest things I have ever had in my entire life. There was no menu of what could be made, you ask the bartender both in the piano bar and the main bar what can they make and they don't speak english so they have no clue what you're talking about. There are no frozen pina coladas or anything like that, no mojitoes because they told us they can't grow the mint (yet everywhere else there seems to be able to because that's what we drank on all the excursions we went on) so we drank rum and pineapple juice which got disgusting after a while. The beer was pretty nasty too but good enough for a change once in a while. Virtually none of the staff that worked there spoke english which made it very challenging to communicate. Food was horrible all the time, even the a la carte and the snack bar. We went to the a la carte one night and 2 of us ordered the same thing and they said that they couldn't do that they could only give us one because that's all the chef had. Are you kidding me?? There was probably 20 to 30 cats that were skin and bones hanging out around the restaurant looking for people to feed them. It was sad and disgusting at the same time. They were even inside the a la carte restaurant while we were eating.

On the weekends the resorts are opened up for Cubans to come and spend the weekends there also along with the tourists. Well, let me tell you, once they come and are on the resort they take over everything and it's like you don't exist anymore. They are rude and obnoxious for the most part and the tourists no longer matter anymore. You can stand in line waiting for a drink for an hour and if the Cubans come to get a drink they are served first not to mention they butt in line all the time also. There was only one bartender out of all the ones that were there that made sure that people were served in the order that they came to the bar. I'm not racist in the least little bit, I believe everyone is equal and should be treated equally but let me tell you these Cuban people have got to be some of the rudest people I have ever seen or met in my entire life and this truly makes it a shame as they are the representatives of their country.

I don't even know what else to say about this place. Every aspect of our time there was terrible and I don't know why anyone would willingly pay money to stay there. We were able to go to the sister resort next door one night to eat there and check out the entertainment which is all the same at all the resorts and repetitive every night. Not good shows for children to watch as they are quite sexual. That resort seemed a bit better aside from the mass amounts of mosquitos but they had better food, drinks, it was a nicer resort. We couldn't switch to stay there though which was silly because we would have rather stayed there instead. We hated Mayanabo so much that we spent over $400 USD on excursions for the entire week leaving us only 1 day on the resort without anything to do just so that we could get the heck away from there and that was the best thing that we could have ever done. We had a fabulous time on all the excursions that we went on and the food was amazing. The people were amazing and we had a fabulous time off the resort. If you do go to Santa Lucia be sure to go to King Ranch. Vincent is amazing and it was truly an eye opening experience. The experience you get there is the real Cuba, not the Cuba that you see through the eyes of the resorts.

Although cheap we will not be returning to this place and will not recommend anyone else to be going there either. I would recommend the Dominican Republic instead. I would like to try other parts of Cuba in hopes that it is more beautiful and fun than what we were exposed to at this pitiful resort but I'm very leery on doing so. I think this place spoiled the Cuba experience for me. Stay away from this place and stay somewhere else!!!

Room Tip: Best tip is to stay somewhere else. Seriously.

“Great relaxing vacation and Great Value for my money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

5th time at the Maynabo and was once more a good trip with value for my money, this 2.5 or 3 star hotel is more like a 3.5 or 4 star depending of your expectations. The staff is courteous and pleasant, yes the hotel is not new but they have been doing renovations and the place is very clean and decent. The cafe bar is open 24 hours, the buffet is not overly big but always had variety of meat and fish, rice, veggies, pasta, salads, hors d'oeuvre, good desert and enjoyed the fresh omelet prepared by the cook at breakfast, to sum it up definitely had more choice than I would have had home and could not have spent a week-end in Montreal or Toronto for what this trip cost me. It is a great place to relax, the beach is nice but for swimming but if your feet are sensitive I recommend water shoes as it is a little rocky because of the coral reef which is a great place for snorkeling and even thought I do not use the pool I find it very nice and you usually get a nice breeze around it because of its location. You can enjoy the pedal boat, catamaran rides and my favorite is horseback riding on the beach, this is also a great place for Kyte surfing and they also have a good instructor. I did not see any old men with young prostitutes at the hotel but like anywhere else in the world I have seen multi-cultural couples on the beach which could have been staying at any resorts in Santa Lucia. They have great musicians playing in the restaurant at dinner time and also as part of night entertainment show. I had to leave my room at 6:15 on my last they as my bus to the airport was scheduled for 7:00am and the barman of the coffee bar was even dressed in a black suit with red bow tie and was preparing good cappuccino coffee and grilled sandwiches, they also had fruit, shortbread cookies and butter bread, overall very satisfied and will be going back.

“Very Nice Place :)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

I found a deal online that was just too good to pass up so for $167+taxes (less than $450 per person all in) I came ro tripadvisor expecting the worst and since the reviews were mostly pretty good I decided to taks a chance and I am very happy I did!

Airport and customs was quick and soon enough we were on our way for a 90 minute bus ride to the coast with a bag of "celabration beers" from the nice locals and on arival there was a band waiting to greet us with a welcome drink. Before we could drink it we were thru check-in and someone had our luggage and taking us to the room.

We were in room #346 in building 3 and it was pretty small but the bed was big and the AC worked well so for what I paid that was all I was expecting. We only slept, showered and kept the stuff we were not using in there anyways so it was more than good enough. There were some bug issues but but not all that bad and its to be expected with the windows open so often. Nothing we could not deal with. Housekeeping was very good and part way thru our trip they took delivery of hundreds of mini fridges and we all got one in every room. Not sure if this will always be there because other resorts charge for this but ours was free so that was a nice suprise.

This was a small resort so there were not lots of people around and that suited me just fine. The ones that were there for the most part was friendly enough and you got to know lots of them over the course of the week. The pool was NEVER more than half full (the lounge chairs that is) so we did not feel crowded. The water was a bit cold but after laying in the sun thats not so bad and once you are in there for a bit its just perfect! They charge you $15 pesos per person to use their towels but you get it all back when you return them. You need $25 pesos to leave the country anyways so its like money in the bank so no big deal.

The buffet is actually pretty good. In fact the best I had in Cuba and my other experience was a 4 star in Veradaro. Always good options and they change it up a bit each day with constient staples always there. Pizza was good, pasta was great, and all in all this was my biggest worry going in and I was very happy with the food. There is also a 24 hour snak bar by the pool so we never went hungry. I asked some questions in the forum because there was talk about going to other resorts and it really seemed to be a popular topic and here is the deal. If you want to try another resort get the front desk to give you a slip and go ahead and give it a try! If you want to go visit another resort go ahead and do it and feel free to have a drink if you wanna hang out for a bit but think of it as a guest in another persons house. Dont take advantage and stay all day but feel free to check it out. Offer a tip to the server and be on your way. It is not encouraged but not discouraged either. Thats the bottom line on that topic.

The pool bar is great with awesome service. LOTS of options and even a menu so you can ask for those fruity drinks everyone seems to like on vacation but the beer worked nicely for me. The beach bar is beautiful and again, lots of options. We brought 52 ounce "BUBBA's" so we did not have to go back and forth so much and most people were jealous of them! I highly suggest you bring something like this with you. I'll never go to a resort without these again!! The disco is kinda a joke but the bar is open till 2am so if you want a drink thats where you go. I'm sure with a different crowd it could be much better but I'd say the average age of a guest my week was easily over 55 and not disco people. If nightlife is a draw for you there is a good one right next door that I will address in a bit.

If I had to pick a disappointment it would be the beach. the sand was OK but could have been better taken care of like they did down the was at other resorts. As reported the water is VERY rocky. I read other reports saying bring water shoes and I laughed at those people and didnt bother but they were right and I was wrong! Without water shoes the beach is not a great place to be. It was much more windy at the beach and thats not so bad on a really hot day but we decided to spend most of out time at the pool. The water activities are free and seemed fun but we never tried it. I wish we had looking back but we just did not. There were some locals selling cigars and stuff but not many and a simple no was good enough. Was never an issue at all.

There is lots of things to do around the resort and here is my experience with them. We did the catamaran out to the coral reef and a seafood lunch. The cost is up to $69 pesos per person and was a good day. There is a lobster diner at nearby coco beach that we never got to but heard from our new friends was a good time for $35 pesos per person. Lots of horse and buggys around to take you up and down this small strip of land but we never did that either. It was on my list but we never got around to it. Right beside the resort is a disco that was really jumping every night till 5am. We stopped by our first night and there were lots of people there and seemed like a fun time but we were tired and never got back there. If I had to offer my "dont miss" would be a stop at a small pizza place. Out the resort to the right and maybe a 4 minute walk across the street is a few shops and a small residental area wehre lots of the workers live. Its worth the walk just to see this and learn to be thankful for everything we have and take advantage of. Turn left past the store then first left again and there is this little pizza shed where the guy will make you a pizza in a ting "oil drum" looking wood burning stove. It costs $1 peso per pizza and he folds it over and hands it to you in a small piece of cardboard so not to hurt your fingers and it is SO GOOD! Across the street from him is 4cent (ya, super cheap) cigars! They are locals and dont come in a tube or fance box. I dont smoke so didnt care about this but if thats your kind of thing why go anywhere else?? This walk was one of my favorite parts of the week! We hit the other resorts to look around and they were MUCH bigger and had fun things like swim up bars, more al-a-cart restaurants and other bells and whistles so if thatsw your thing go stay there. It was WAY to big for my liking and I was happy to get back to our little property :)

Thats about it but feel free to message me with any questions. I had lots of help before I left and will be happy to pay it forward now that I have been there.

I would easily return to the resort and will recomend it to my friends and family so if you are on the fence weither or not to book here I recomend you take advantage of a good deal and enjoy your trip!

Room Tip: Building 3 is close to the off site disco and it is kinda loud. I didnt mind it but if you need a q...
