“The Ryan Air of Country house hotels”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

Appalling. The room was freezing cold upon arrival and the asthmatic air con didn't seem to make any difference. Bizarrely there was a door underneath the mattress on the bed. The room and bathroom were both dirty, hairs on the furniture on arrival were still there the next day. On check out they charged me GBP 2.5 to settle a bill of GBP 7 (room prepaid by company), when I complained the receptionist wasn't interested. Buffet food during the conference was of motorway service station standard. Possibly the worst hotel that I've ever stayed at.

Room Tip: Stay elsewhere

Dear Premierneige,

I apologise if the hotel did not live up to the standard which you expected. A bed board is what was set below the mattress on request of the previous resident and mistakenly not removed prior to your arrival. I checked our records of bed board placement and I therefore was able to locate the specific room and date of your stay. I have since personally inspected the room with the Executive Housekeeper and the room was cleaned to our rated AA 4 star standard. The lapse while you were our guest was agreeably unacceptable.

Thank you for your feedback. I know the response from your company organiser and other attendees was very positive and I appreciate hearing your personal perspective. We continue to have a successful working relationship with your organisation and I hope that when the next meeting takes place, you may be return to experience that which others have enjoyed.

I would request that you contact me directly to address any concerns that you may have. It gives us valuable feedback with which to continuously improve our product and service for all of our guests.

Kind regards,

James

“Fantastic”

We spent a pre valentines night here, got it on late deals for £65 (B &B) a real bargain and well worth the money. We had a relaxing afternoon in the spa area and was planning on eating in the hotel. After looking at prices we decided to go the 'Toby' down the road, if you go on their site there is a deal for 2 for ten pounds, Lovely carvery.

We got a re- furnished room....only looked like there was 2 refurnished on our floor. (Floor 3) So I would ask for one when booking. As comparing our room to others as I looked in on check out there was a big difference. Ours was modern and fresh. The others had dated pine chunky furniture.

Will def return..enjoy your stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a refurnished room

Dear Hannah,

We thank you for your comments. It is always a pleasure to see when someone takes the time to post the positives and acknowledge that they have enjoyed their stay with us. We do offer a number of dining options within the hotel, yet I do appreciate that you found something off site which better suited your needs on this occasion. I am glad that you were able to experience one of the sample rooms as it demonstrates the future once a decision is made on refurbishment.

You note that you plan on returning which we do take as a great compliment. We look forward to welcoming you back.

Kind Regards,

James

“Great hotel, shame about the snow”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

First visit and could not fault the hotel, from the staff, breakfast, room and the gym.
The staff were well organized.
As there was snow & ice outside the hotel entrance a member of staff came out to help carry my bags into reception, never had that before.
Although a little small, the fitness room had top of the range equipment, and the pool, sauna and steam room we're quite large.
The room was excellent, very clean, large TV plus free WiFi.
Breakfast was very good and plentiful there was a buffet and it seemed that you could order items from the room service menu.
No fault found with this very well appointed hotel, will come back in the summer with spouse to have a couple of days golfing

Dear MAT900XLT

Many thanks for taking the time to gives us your positive feedback. It seems that you were able to enjoy many areas of our hotel and resort facilities. Most appreciated is your mention of the attentive nature of a team member who assisted you on arrival in the snow. Knowing the guys at the front, I am surprised that they didn’t try to shut of the snowfall to make you more comfortable. They are all about Great British Hospitality.

Please return to us and enjoy the entirety of the estate, whether walking the award winning gardens or playing our championship golf course. Perhaps our Sunday Driver golf package which may interest you when you return. We hope to see you again soon.

Kind Regards,

James

“Every Silver Lining has a Cloud”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

We recently spent a two-night stay at Oulton Hall on a Valentine’s package which included bed and breakfast with dinner on the first night. Having read other guests’ reviews regarding the good, the bad and the ugly, this is our opinion:
As you drive up to the hotel it looks very stately and imposing. The reception area and entrance hall is also very eye-catching with its grandiose furniture and décor.
We’ve stayed at other De Vere locations and found the rooms to be of a similar style/standard so we knew what to expect in that department. However, on this occasion our room did have a well-worn, tired look about it.
The leisure facilities in these places are all similarly kitted out so again no great surprises or shocks.

We couldn’t find fault regarding quality of the food but the evening dinner was a long way short of a belly-buster: very well presented and tasty but not much on your plate.
We had a look at the dessert menu which cost extra, however it is approximately 8 or 9 quid for apple pie/trifle/ice cream etc.... so we opted to give it a miss.
As highlighted by previous reviewers the price of drinks is eye-watering and to keep the cost down I suppose you don’t have to buy drinks in the hotel but as we were on a romantic break we splashed out on two glasses of wine each per night which added almost 60 quid to the bill!
On the second evening we decided to dine at the Toby Inn, just up the road where for £5.95 you can fill your plate from the carvery. It’s not exactly 5* food but then you’re not paying five star prices, although the quality is above average.

And finally, the really disappointing experience during our relaxing stay at Oulton Hall was the horrendous night’s sleep on the second night. Thursday had been very quiet as there weren’t many people around the hotel in general but Friday night was a real eye-opener. We surmised there was some kind of pre-wedding entourage booked-in because we noticed an influx of twenty- somethings arriving on our floor. We aren’t old fuddy duddies by any means but raucous and inconsiderate rabble parading up and down the corridors until after 4am is beyond the pale!!
NB:
“It is absurd to divide people into good and bad. People are either charming or tedious.” (Oscar Wilde)

Dear cyclingmaniac,

I appreciate the time which you have taken to give us your feedback. We are pleased that you were able to experience the Valentine’s package. We have had wonderful response from guests who found both quality and value in the experience. Many have asked about upcoming offers so that they can return.

Perhaps, you will be back to see us and enjoy another stay soon. I do suggest that you experience the fantastic desserts created by our Pastry Chef and her team. The local rhubarb trifle at £7.05 or the apple charlotte at £6.25 have become real crowd pleasers.

The night team does regular walks throughout the hotel and they will directly address any noise issues in the interest of other guests such as yourself who may be disturbed by such behaviour. I apologise if that was not the case on this occasion and would always encourage anyone to bring it to our attention so that we can better serve you and ensure a comfortable night’s sleep.

The quote from Oscar Wilde at the close of your review has always been a favourite . . . your ‘Every Silver Lining has a Cloud’ leads me to believe that you may be a Julian Schnabel fan.

Again, thank you for your comments. We look forward to welcoming you back to Oulton Hall.

Kind regards,

James

“Lovely weekend getaway”

Nice for a quiet weekend away. Good gym and spa with decent pool. As always with de Verre, perfect if you're into golf. Restaurants are good too. The whole thing is not cheap though (room 85, dinner with wine around the same).
