We travelled to Malta for the first time 2 weeks ago for our annual sun holiday. We arrived at the Luna at about 5:30pm on 20/07/09. The reception area is newly refurbed and looks lovely. The lady on reception was ok and checked us in immediately. We asked on checking in if it was a seaview room as this is what we had requested when booking and she said she wasn't sure and sent a walkie talkie message to find out. When there was no reply she managed to remember that it wasn't and that we needed to pay a surcharge for this.
When we found our room we opened up the door and it was extremely dark inside and incredibly warm!! It smelled of smoke too. We had been put on a smoking floor despite our request there too. There was a balcony which looked to the opposite side of the hotel and a bit of the sea (which i suppose we should be thankful for!).Thats why it was so dark because we were overlooked by the whole building. Also had a very attractive gas cylinder on it! The kitchen area was sooooo dated. It had the most sparce collection of utensils i have ever seen and very little space for meal prep on it. The fridge was not very cool. There was a dining table and four chairs-nice plastic bright orange school like chairs!! So hidious! The double bed was two beds pushed together. The bathroom was ok. No TV, radio, pictures, lamps. The floor was filthy-there were cigarette butts, toenail clippings, electrical tape and lots of dirt on it.
The next morning we went down to complain about the state of the floor and the reception was quite busy so just out of decency we took the receptionist aside and her response was "nice". She said i'll make a note of it! Luckily there was another receptionist (i think a bit more senior) there and she said we will get it cleaned asap. She did apologise as we were walking away to be fair and the floor was clean when we returned to our room later that day. Generally we did not find the staff particularly great. We didn't eat in the hotel.
We spent much of the holiday on the roof top pool which was a nice area but in desparate need of some more sun loungers and some new ones for that matter. A lot of them had been repaired with wood and nails! Not the most comfortable on the backs of your legs! Pool was lovely to cool off in after sunbathing and we found it to be quite clean.
Another thing to highlight was that the second to last night a man came to check our gas cylinder and told us that we had turned it of which i confirmed. It had been off when we arrived and i had turned it off after each use. He said that this was wrong because we shared a cylinder with another room. No-one told us this!! We had been there a whole week! I only hope that the room we shared it with had only just arrived!
Room service came once a week and changed bed sheets and towels and ? cleaned the room also. If you wanted sheets or towels in addition there was a surcharge. For use of the aircon unit in the room it was 12 euros a day, for use of safe in the room there was a surcharge and for matresses for the loungers there was, yes you guessed it, a charge.
The hotel was a complete disappointment. Not as described at all. The pool was the only redeeming feature i think. The bay was pretty but there are other bays just as nice in Malta. We did go a nice boat trip to comino and gozo which left from the bottom of the hill.
