We have just returned from a very enjoyable 5 night stay at the Sheraton Salobre.
Firstly I should say that this hotel is really hard to find in the dark! We entered the resort and drove up and down the main road within it trying to locate the correct driveway - there are various different entrances to private villa complexes etc and the streetlight and uplighter that should shine onto the hotel's name next to one such driveway were both broken. Eventually we found it, but during our stay various people stopped us when we were walking along the road to ask where the hotel was, as they couldn't find it either! Top tip - it has flagpoles just outside the entrance and a staircase up the side of the driveway too.
We were greeted on arrival with cava and then due to some confusion over where to park the car (we opted for parking on the road each night, free compared to 7 euros in the private underground carpark), the porter vanished so we decided to take ourselves to our room - little did we realise what a mission this would be! The hotel is HUGE and in different blocks which mean you have to take one lift, walk a bit, take another lift, walk a bit, etc etc. Just when we decided to turn back and ask at reception, we spotted a sign and headed off in the right direction!
Once we arrived at our room - what a delight! Absolutely gorgeous room, huge wetroom/bathroom (with incredible shower that I am already missing), his 'n' hers washbasins, huge bed, lovely balcony with plenty of seating. The only tiny problem, as someone else mentioned, was that the pillows are pathetically limp - my partner had to use two extra decorative cushions underneath his two pillows. Even Travelodges have spare pillows in the wardrobe! We didn't bother to ask for extras admittedly, as our solution worked perfectly well, but it was a bit odd to have such an amazingly comfortable bed with such pathetic pillows!
As we arrived in the evening we went straight to dinner at Gofio, the buffet restaurant, which was nice - not quite gourmet but tasty and plenty of selection. Excellent service too from very friendly staff.
We awoke in the morning to a pitch black room - the blackout curtains are blissful. Opened them to a stunning view across the golf course.
Breakfast was great with every taste catered for - full English style cooked, cereals, fresh fruit, yoghurts, cold meats, cheese, and fish, or pastries - and churros of course! Again very cheerful staff who came round to offer tea/coffee and delicious fresh juice.
We ate one evening at Camaleon, the a la carte restaurant on the ground floor. Apparently you usually need to book but (presumably due to it being low season) when we turned up they had some spare tables. The food was great and service very attentive, though we did feel a bit unworthy of being there - not posh enough really! But it was lovely.
We also ate at Perenquen, the tapas bar in the same area as Camaleon, on two nights. It took a pretty long time to be served at the bar when we arrived each time but the food was brilliant and a really lovely relaxed atmosphere with seating on sofas, pouffes, or at bars. The drinks at the bar were incredibly generous too - I don't think I've ever ordered a G&T in the UK and been told "say when..."! Ditto with the generous glasses of wine. Really enjoyable.
We managed to find our way to the rooftop pool on our second night just in time for a stunning sunset. This clifftop area is an absolute mission to find - from the ground floor we took the lobby lift to level 1, walked through the outdoor seating area and turned left to lift 3 (I think!), took the lift to level 3, changed to lift 4 and took that lift to level 7, then walked up a ramp marked "children's play area", past this play area and arrived at the adults-only rooftop/clifftop pool, which has 4-poster sun beds and a stunning view. There is a huge pool and a bar, though we didn't actually sample either. It's worth exploring to find it as it's really peaceful up there.
One downside was the extortionate charges for internet access in rooms (which we decided not to go for!), and the rather feeble free alternative in the lobby. We did check our emails a few times on these PCs which are so ancient that various well-known websites will tell you you are using an outdated browser version and things won't display properly etc etc, and they are so locked up to prevent you downloading things that when internet explorer crashes, you can't access the task manager to close the process and start again. It's really surprising to find a 5 star hotel without free wifi in all rooms and communal areas.
All in all we had a really relaxing and enjoyable stay. The staff were all incredibly friendly, from the cleaners who shared a "buenos dias" with us in the hallways, to the maitre d' and sommelier of the a la carte restaurant, to the reception staff. The entire resort is peaceful and quiet and beautiful. The architecture of the hotel is beautiful (if confusing to navigate around!). The location is great, near to the GC1 highway and to Maspalomas. We don't tend to return to hotels once we've stayed once, as there are so many places in the world to see! But if we did, we certainly would return to this one, and our experience here has encouraged us to look at other Sheratons in the future. Thoroughly recommended.
Room Tip: Room 304 was great! Ask for a view over the golf course.
