We booked Dunas Maspalomas as a last minute deal about a month before departure. We didn't know what to expect as we had not booked an all inclusive package before. In hindsight, more research would have been sensible... but you live and learn!
Staff & Service -
Reception staff were poor. Unfriendly and not always happy to help. Often stood at the desk watching three people look at a computer screen whilst being ignored. This was not the kind of service we would expect from any star-rated hotel. Responses to our questions made us feel a little like we were stupid for not knowing the answers, or the responses were short and delivered at speed. Some staff were an exception to this rule.
Restaurant service was ok, some friendly staff, but businesslike in their approach.
Bar staff were all great! Specifically Jesus, who was absolutely hilarious with his dry brand of sarcastic humour. He asked us about our day every night and seemed genuinely interested in our holiday. Finally, Maarten from the Entertainments team. He recognised that we were a couple of very few young people at the resort and took time to come and sit with us, get to know us and have a chat. The guy was great to hang out with, but also fantastic with the kids and families around the resort. An absolute credit to the hotel!
Room-
Nice and simple, as expected from a 3*. Comfortable to hang out in, but hotter than the fires of hell, especially at night. Air con would be a welcome investment for this hotel! :) We didn't spend much time in the room, as we like to go and see things. Clean, tidy, and with regular maid visits. Terrace and garden furniture was a nice touch, as it was lovely sitting out on our private terrace.
Food-
Tasty, and befitting of the 3* standard. Good choice and variety, but with a samey feel. Highlights were freshly cooked steaks, prawns and fish. Breakfast was the same every day, but that wasn't an issue. Only had one lunch as we were away from the hotel most of the time, but it was very good from what we saw. Make sure you try the traditional Canarian stews (Cuttlefish was amazing!) and get your large portions of Mojo Sauce. Yum!
Complex-
Clean and tidy with lots of vegetation and palm trees, which was lovely. Pools were well maintained and there is much choice of pools. (6 to choose from!)
Overall-
We are a couple, and both aged under 26, and we felt that the resort, although lovely, was aimed solely at families. There could of been more mature entertainment on offer for couples such as ourselves, In future we would be more concerned about this before booking. In the pools, we felt uncomfortable, as we did not have kids, and a lot of people stared at us as if we were being inappropriate. Unavoidable, but not welcomed. Perhaps an addition of an adults only pool might buck this trend?
Finally, on checking out we were disappointed by the service at reception (once again!). Our flight was not until 19.30, but we had to check out at 12.00. We were offered a place to store our bags and use of a courtesy room, but our all-inc wristbands were cut off, and we were told we would now have to pay for drinks if we wanted them. We felt that this was unfair, and an accommodation could of been made for us to have a few cold drinks in the afternoon heat whilst waiting for our transfer.
All in all, a great resort if you are coming with children, however if you are coming without, we would recommend you try somewhere a little more upbeat. When we have kids, we'll probably be back!
Room Tip: Try and ask for pool view.
