My first review! :-) I should start by telling you that my wife and I are not at all fussy, we have stayed in a little shack on the top of an hotel in Turkey (unspecified accom.!!) with an army of ants marching through the room, from 1 door to another, at the foot of the bed, it´s amazing how quickly you get used to lifting your feet:-) if we didn't bother them, they didn't stop.
Having said that, when we pay for 5 stars, we expect a little more than H10 had to offer. We stayed from the 28th Jan - 4th feb 2012.
First the plusses, which there are quite a lot of, we found the food to be excellent, we found the staff in the restaurant respond brilliantly to.. smiles, yes, it doesn't take much, a smile with our requests, and nothing was too much trouble, we thought the majority of staff were very friendly, I don't know if that is because my wife and I smile a lot and are grateful to people who give up normal working hours to pamper for tourists, but hey ho, I digress....
We found the rooms to be very spacious, and we liked the hardness of the beds, although we would have preferred a double bed, we managed very well with 2 very large twin beds. We thought the rooms to be tastefully furnished, comfy and cosy. We had a view of the sea from our room, 468, a view of the little harbour Pasito Blanco and a lovely sunset every day.
We loved the huge sun loungers :-) but you really have to be quick to get one, even though the pool rules state' no reserving of sun beds ', nobody took any notice, we were lucky one windy day to find one vacant, brilliant, what luxury, but we didn't fall into the game of getting up at 6 oclock just to place a towel, and shame on you that do, especially if you don't plan on using the sunbed until late morning or after lunch!! The ordinary sun loungers are ok, and there was a parasol for every 2 sun loungers, so no probs there.
As mentioned by many others, the hotel is large, we liked the layout of the place, thought it to be different from anything else. We had a long walk from our room to everything, this is not a complaint, just a statement, I like walking up an appetite, it made me feel better about the enormous meals I knew I would be devouring:-)
The meals, no I should be fair, the breakfast, was fantastic, we chose B & B because we like to be out trying local restaurants, from freshly made omelettes to the freshly squeezed orange juice, and everything in between, wow, no complaints whatsoever, we are early risers, so being in the restaurant at 8 - 8.30 was perfect, staff worked very hard, were attentive and did their best to get the tables cleared and laid as quickly as possible, like i said earlier, a smile works wonders.
The outdoor areas are all spotless, we liked the cacti in the garden areas, it's different and very interesting, the gardeners do a magnificent job, the pool areas were clean and very presentable. The public areas were also very presentable, and because of the unusualness of the hotel, nice to hang out in.
OK now to the negatives :-(
The hotel is a bit tatty, I don't care who you are, how much you love the place, you have got to admit, it is showing it's age, it is badly in need of refurbishment, mostly in the bedrooms. Although a magnificent building to see from afar, when you get up close, a little bit of the shine is fading, the rust and the black mould in the grouting in the bathrooms, paint starting to peel in the rooms, the hair dryer in our bathroom was hanging off the wall, OK it was an easy fix, but is it right that a guest in a 5 star hotel should have to fix the hair dryer before being able to use it?
WIFI was rubbish, didn't work everywhere, and very poor reception when a signal found.
We thought the hotel lacked that last bit of polish to bring it into 5 star, it's a fine 4 star, but no more.
Location, location, location.
Perfect for golfers, almost made me want to start playing golf, beautiful course to the left of the hotel, 2 more only 5 mins drive.
At the end of the promenade that goes all the way from Masapolemas to Meloneras, above the mostly empty shopping area, but with some fine restaurants, (we recommend Casa Serafin) it felt a little bit like it was stuck out there as an afterthought, but it makes for a quiet area with very few people venturing to the end. Only 15 - 20 mins walk into a livelier part if that's what you need.
We recommend hiring a car, you can get them from as little as 55 euro for 3 days, and if you love driving, you'll love the drive along the coast road to Puerto Mogan and up into the mountains, I did!!!
All in all, we had a great time, we would go back to H10 after a facelift of the rooms :-) But we would still recommend the place to friends and family, we liked the staff, so can't really relate to the complaints of them.
One thing more, we have stayed in many tourist hotels in many tourist resorts, in warm / hot countries I have yet to see carpets on the floors, tiles keep the place cooler, and, as the majority of the hotel is open to the elements, carpets in / on the corridors would seem a bad choice to me !
Hope this helps someone:-)
