Thankfully we chose maspalomas as our destination rather than playa del ingles, just up the road. The difference in the quality of hotels, restaurants, bars and shops is huge. Unless you fit the 18/30 club, dont make a mistake and book the wrong location!
Maspalomas is clean and friendly, adjacent to acres of sandunes and is where the large, more expensive hotels are. It's also where the older, predominately German tourists are.
The Lopesan Costa Meloneras hotel is huge, very imposing and particularly impressive at night with illuminated fountains etc.. Looks like a grand Florida resort with many eating and drinking choices on site and many pools to swim in within the large subtropical gardens. As we booked b&b, we only ate once in the hotel in the evening which was good. Breakfast buffet choice is vast - just go early or late to avoid the hungry masses (it is a huge hotel).
Maspalomas, outside the hotel grounds, has many quality restaurants to choose from, day and night, so unless you dont want to walk anywhere, why limit your food choices by booking halfboard?
Our upgraded room was excellent - spacious, clean and comfortable with a lovely marble bathroom and powershower. Staff upgraded the tv to a large flat plasma when we were there.
Had no problem accessing sunbeds, as raised in other reviews, and the lazy river through the grounds and swim up bars are great. Service from all staff was also first class.
For a weeks holiday, this is an excellent choice of hotel and location (unless you are under 25!).
