That day I had travelled from Caen to Granville (a marvellous old heap of a town that you learn to love), taking-in the Bayeaux Tapestry (Bayeux had super-organised parking) .. and thinking that they could have woven it yesterday), then - TIRED! - from Granville, I sped, easily on the well-signed main roads, to Le Moulin de Ducey.
If you lke a chatty owner this place is heaven: but the owner and his wife are charming, and the quiet village, with the resplendenlty romantic river racing beneath the old mill building, will suit both a retired couple, or a brace of Newly Weds. If you are travelling with friends, this is the perfect "off the beaten" venu.
There is no restaurant, TAKE NOTE: but the owner directs you to a nice hotel one minutes walk away (drink what you like - no need to move the car from the DEDICATED Moulin de Ducey car park). In this allied hotel the food is good, well served, as the place is well managed. It's by the river, so - on a fine evening- you can take your coffee etc. outside.
The rooms at Le Moulin are slightly old fashioned but clean, with the soothing sound of the mill race for most of the rooms. It is all very civilised, and the breakfast is traditional with a marvellous window overlooking the ancient bridge and the river.
You are half an hour from Mont Saint Michel, a easy 70 minutes from St Malo, and the elegant delights of Dinard.
When I say that the owner is "chatty" - what I mean is that he is "convivial" - a lovely couple - just the sort you wish to chat with on a relaxing holiday [they are fluent in a nukmber of European langauges]. If you are on business: the hotel is a great place to unwind - I never use the expression 'Chill Out' - I feel like a chunk of farmed salmon!
Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the river are very nice.
