I thought my so-called 'Charming' room offered poor value at 99 Euros (no discounts found anywhere): although modern, it was small and dark, with dull, unattractive decor; the old style window was hard to shut and its single glazing did not keep out the noise of the busy road; there was no sound proofing, and the sounds of the other inhabitants were clearly heard. The light switch by the door worked only when the switch over the bed was turned on: annoying to have to work this out when you have just arrived; the bathroom was very small, with hardly room to sit on the toilet (and I am not very large). Breakfast cost 10 Euros extra if booked online (14 otherwise). It was not very extensive or exciting, and the coffee was cold. There was no warm welcome on arrival, and no explanation of facilities (e.g. use of the nearby Martins Chateau du Lac hotel's spa?). However, the receptionists were friendly enough if anything was needed, and helpful re giving directions. Bar: had only terrible high stools, nowhere comfy to sit except for a room between the bar and the conservatory - as the lights in there were not switched on, I sat in darkness - a pity, as it could have been pleasant looking out over the lake at the back. No one appeared to be serving drinks, but then I realised that the busy receptionist had to act as barmaid too. Dreadful muzak in bar / breakfast area was audible from the room. The very limited choice of beers (just a few bottled varieties) was disappointing to find in Belgium. There was no restaurant for dinner though a delivery service was available for pizzas etc (not used). Handy to have a fridge in the room. Free use of the computer by the hotel entrance is offered but the online connection is extremely slow. The staircase to the room was too narrow when carrying cases and no was help offered, and there was no lift. The management's hectoring tone about eco matters in their literature and in post-stay e-mails adds to one's general irritation (I came by train and, since there were no taxis, walked the 2 kms from the station - how much more eco would they like me to be?). Emphasis on providing a better customer experience would surely be more appropriate - especially at this price. Tea and coffee faciities in rooms are available only for those booked via Best Western - another little irritation. Overall, the management's attitude seems slightly penny-pinching and the hotel lacks its own identity: it seems to act as a cheaper overspill for the Chateau du Lac hotel, and as a small conference base. Staff are perhaps more used to handling groups than individual travellers. Since there is no competition (the expensive Chateau is the only other hotel in the area and there are hardly any B & Bs), there is little incentive for management to make improvements here.
