“Beautiful hotel, what a shame about limited menu choices”

We stayed at the Sporthotel in May 2011. The hotel is very pleasing on the eye, exactly what you would want from an Austrian hotel. We booked with Inghams and the standard balcony rooms were fully booked so we paid extra for a larger balcony room. The view of the mountains from the balcony was sublime but was spoilt by the very large metal chimney stack stuck up right in the middle of the balcony which appeared to be from the fire in the lounge area below. Fortunately it wasnt lit all the time we were there. We couldnt fault the quality of the food, it was indeed as good as any of the top-class cruises we have been on. However, we were very aggrieved by the lack of choice. Most evening there were only 2 choices of main course and one of those would be a dumplings with cheese sauce vegetarian option. Also for dessert every evening there were only 2 choices and one of those was always fruit cocktail. Therefore we felt that there was a bit of a take it or leave it attitude with the main course and dessert- because in reality there was no 'choice'. We are not fussy eaters but there must be people who do not wish to eat deer or veal which were on the menu, their only option would have been cheesy dumplings. We had to complain several times over several days to get the shower screen repaired in our bathroom. The rubber sealant strip was missing and this meant that every time we showered the water seeped through the 1" gap and left the floor flooded, which was very dangerous. Even wedging towels in the gap for a temporary fix didnt work . The seperate toilet very often smelt of sewage. We loved the village of Igls but found that our Representative, Laura, didnt tell us very much about the local area. Someone tipped us off about a beautiful park that could be accessed just around the corner by the pizza restaurant. Despite the Representative stating there were no other restaurants or bars in the village we also found a lovely friendly bar directly behind the hotel, turn left outside the hotel and it was just behind the hotels car park. The food and drinks were very reasonable and the two ladies that ran it were very friendly. On the last evening all of the Inghams guests were given no real choice but to leave the hotel as they had overbooked another party but decided it would be the Inghams guests who would be inconvenienced by being made to move to the Hilton Hotel in Innsbruck. There were quite a few angry Inghams guests .We didnt mind moving as there was an event on in Innsbruck that evening and therefore it actually was more convenient for us. However, we were not provided with the promised quality meal and drinks at the Hilton. We were shown to an unatmospheric conference room with a poor quality cheap buffet and at first we were advised we could only have one drink of beer, wine or a soft drink. After a posse of Inghams guests spoke with various members of staff this was finally changed and more drinks were allowed. Nothing was done about the food though. Since arriving home we have contacted Inghams with all of the issues we experienced and from the latest reviews it appears that some changes have been made , which I am sure Inghams guests will appreciate. We did have a wonderful holiday and the Hotel and village are lovely. It is really easy to get into Innsbruck from Igls.

Room Tip: We cannot remember our room number but if you pay for an upgrade to a larger room with a lounge area...

“WONDERFUL HOTEL”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2011

We stayed from 27th August for one week, and we can't wait to go back. It was our first time in Austria. after wanting to go there for many years - it didn't disappoint.

The hotel is as good as the reviews say. We had a fabulous room (204) with a lovely lounge, large bedroom - exceptionally comfy beds - and an enormous bathroom. Fantastic balcony overlooking the village and the mountains - what a view!

The food was lovely, 6 courses every evening, but not too much to be overfaced. Plenty of choice at breakfast and, as we were on a package with Inghams, we also got a packed lunch every day. Although we got the same things each day in the packed lunch it was great to have when we were out walking or sightseeing. The staff are all so very friendly and helpful, they really go out of their way to get it right. We normally go on cruises and we can honestly say the food and service was well on a par with most of the best we have been on.

Our only disappointment was that the spa areas are for nude bathing. We British are a bit shy about revealing all, but the Europeans like to expose all. We used the jacuzzi which was okay with swimsuits but it was just a bit embarassing to have others joining us "unclothed".

As for Igls itself, it is the most beautiful little village, but what astounded us most was the way the tourist board went out of their way to entertain visitors. Every day there were free guided walks, quite often including a free coach to the starting point, even to the border of Italy. They laid on evening entertainment, including a guided lantern walk, which took us up the mountain to a fabulous inn where they laid on musical entertainment. The next night was a free show of traditional Tyrolean singing and dancing on the village green. The church also put on free concerts. including a full orchestra - 2 hours of classical music.

The first couple of nights we found it a bit quiet after the entertainment, but then we got friendly with a few other guests and found our way to the pub in the village (Pub a la Pub - "Jeromes"). The drinks were much cheaper and because we were in good company we had a few good nights, more and more of the English hotel guests joined in, so we had a really good laugh. Unfortunately it was very smoky inside, but as it was quite mild we all sat outside in the fresh air.

We found the hotel really friendly, all the English guests were seated in close proximity in the restaurant and it was lovely that we could all chat at breakfast or dinner, planning the day then enquiring what each other had done with the day. The guided walks are a great way of getting to know your fellow guests as many of the participants are from the hotel. There was a real mixture of ages in the hotel and on the walks, including young families, and everyone seemed to enjoy everything there. We do like to mingle with others, but I am sure if you want to be alone you can always find a quiet corner!!!

We were sorry to leave as we felt there was so much more we wanted to do. We bought the 3 day Innsbruck card and did a lot of sightseeing, it is such fantastic value, but there is still so much more we could do on our next trip. Looking back on our photos and video now, we keep saying "next time, we'll go there or do that". We have been fortunate to see a lot of the world with our travels, but can honestly say this has to be among the top of the list of places and hotels we have been to.

As for Inghams, it is the first time we have ever been with them and have to say they were excellent, everything was really well organised and Laura, the rep, was so helpful and informative at the welcome meeting. From landing at Innsbruck to entering our hotel room, took less than one hour. The most efficient arrival of any resort we have been to. They really do know their stuff.

We are sure anyone going there will have a great time. We envy you and can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony room, we paid a bit extra for a large balcony room and it was worth it.

We have just returned from a fabulous week at this Hotel. I have to agree with all the positive reviews. This was our first time in Austria usually preferring to take a beach holiday or a trip to California to see family. The hotel was very nice and we both loved the food. It was varied, sometimes unusual but everything was cooked to perfection. The gardens and pool area were lovely and I had a massage in the Spa that too was lovely. The only negative I can think of is that you have to be naked to use the sauna etc. I don't have a problem with other people being naked but think it should be optional!
The transfer time from tne hotel is only about 20 minutes so we arrived before the rooms were ready , no big deal we just sat on the terrace area and had a drink. The Innsbruck card offers great value for use of cable cars and public transport . Bus runs every 15 mins. tram one an hour , didn't have any problem with either. Lots of highlights too many to list but can recommend taking cable car up patscherkofel and taking the walk to Zirbenweg. It took us a few hours( we are not walkers) it was beautiful! there is a mountain hut on the way to stop for food and drinks . Once at the end of the walk we took a chair lift down the mountain it was just brilliant. The price of the lifts is included in the pass. We then caught a bus back to Inns bruck( not included) . The weather with the exception of one horrendous day was fabulous .. there is a " beach bar" in Innsbruck complete with palm trees sand deck chairs! so if you feel the urge for sand between yout toes that's the place to go. Igls is a small peaceful resort so no nightlife to speak of.. There is a pub across the road if you fancy a change from the hotel bar although the pianist at the hotel was brilliant. There is a beautiful park within a couple of minutes of the hotel and a lake within 15 minutes walk( get free pass form hotel) the lake has showers toilets lockers changing rooms cafe and a bar.. lots of people swimming( too cold for me) and boats .
Will definately return especially if we can get at the same price.

“Best for mature people”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 September 2011

The hotel is comprised of a few buildings of different vintage joined together. Although we booked really early with Inghams and requested two adjoining rooms, on arrival we were told that this was not possible and they did the best they could which meant one room was around the corner [of the same 2nd floor] in an older part of the hotel to the other room. This was slightly inconvenient at times [with two children] but had the advantage of different views. The older room had more character but no mountain views and also suffered from traffic noise, the other room was slightly smaller, more modern and had a great view of the church and the mountains beyond. The beds were very comfortable and the plumbing all worked! The cleaners did an excellent job too. The only problem we suffered really was from the exceptionally high temperatures in the eary part of the week [90 degrees] for neither the bedrooms nor the dining room has air conditioning. This was particulary unpleasant in the dining room one evening and would I think pose a problem if global warming makes these temperatures more common. I would downgrade the hotel from 4 to 3 stars for this reason alone.

Most people seem to enjoy the food. There was a fairly extensive buffet selection and in addition the chef would cook you an omlette or egg & bacon etc if you asked. We found evening meals [you have to choose from a menu that varies each day] to be a bit over elaborate with too many competing flavours but perhaps that was just us. We were not offered any alternative food for our children and in fact it was not until the last night that a new waiter we hadn't seen before asked the youngest whether he would like ice cream for pudding instead of what was on the menu. The kids plates were always too hot also.

The reception staff varied, some were more friendly than others. You should recieve a Tourist Card automatically which e.g. gives you free entrance to the nearby lakes etc but I had to ask for them [one each] and got the impression this was a chore. [At the lake they took a note of the hotel and our names so perhaps there is a cost to the hotel.]

I guess the 4 star rating arises from the spa facilities which we didn't use but the children and my wife used the pool [no jumping or shouting allowed] which they enjoyed although I understand the water was on the cool side!

There is a small games room with ping pong and table football, that's about it for kids.

On the whole we felt that neither the guests nor the hotel particularly welcomed children.

As for Igles, it is conveniently located to visiting Innsbruck either by frequent bus or less frequent tram with a need to change to get to the old town. Both are easy to do and the tram ride is fun but we had a 25 minute wait on the return journey for the connecting tram to Igls [ go across the road and look in the church if you have time to kill, there is nothing else at this point]. The scenery around Igls is spectacular.

There is a Spar supermarket, a chemist and a few small shops and cafes and that's about it. Evening entertainment apart from the hotel pianist [who was very good] and a couple of events in the church garden was non-existent, not even a cafe-bar with an outside area was open where you could have a drink [with the children] after dinner. For us, this was the biggest downside of Igls. Very pretty, but perhaps too quiet for us.

Room Tip: Paying extra for a balcony is only worth it if it is one with a mountain view

My wife and I have just returned (last full week in Aug.) from a superb holiday staying in this hotel. We landed at Innsbruick in glorious sunshine (90 odd degrees) and it remained so until the day we left.
A 20 minute trip by bus took us to the hotel.
The checking in procedure was extremely efficient and all the reception staff were extremely courteous and helpful.
We were allocated Room 122 which was what the Austrians call a Komfort room. An extremely large room with sitting area, large bed (two decent sized twins pulled together), good sized bathroom with shower over bath, and a balcony which got the afternoon sun.
From the minute we entered the Dining Room until the day we left the waiting staff were great, always smiling and cheerful. The dinners were excellent, varied and always a good choice. Generally 5 courses but occassionally a buffet with local dishes.
Avoid the recommended wines (always Austrian) which appear on the menu (very expensive) and look at the wine list. We settled for carafes of French wine each night.
There is not much to say about the breakfast. Fruit juices, good choice of cereals, bread and rolls, hams, cheeses and whatever you want done with eggs !! Also sparkling wine if you want.
Use the Tourist Board (100 yards from hotel entrance) for all the local information.
Plenty of walks laid out in the beautiful countryside that surrounds Igls (pronounced Eagles). The Hotel will provide a packed lunch for you if required (ham roll, cheese roll, piece of fruit, bar of chocolate and bottle of water).
Innsbruck ( a scenic 25 mins by tram or a hectic 15 mins by bus) is well worth a visit, as is the top of the Olympic ski jump.
A really great hotel in a superb location.
