“Bargain Short Break”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

Visited Red Lion on a 2 day break whilst en route from Bristol to Leeds . Only paid £9.95 per night for B&B for myself and wife under terms of Old English Inns offer . An absolute bargain .
Smooth check in with Jude at Reception and allocated Room 29 which was at rear of premises . Room had a king sized bed with range of furnishings more than adequate for my stay together with flat screen TV with Freeview channels . The Red Lion fronts on to a very busy junction and it comprises a public house with letting rooms and a busy restaurant . One needs to use a car to get around as there are no other eating outlets close by and I decided to spend both evenings within the Hotel both eating and drinking .
First night (Wednesday) had Gammon and Lasagne from the main menu which was of good quality and second night (Thursday) ate from 2 for £9.95 menu being Haddock , Chips and Peas . Again generous helping and good quality . Choice of Real Ales available and House Wine of the Season @ £8.95 per bottle .
Would not hesitate to visit again in the future .

Room Tip: Request a room at rear of premises as front facing rooms face out on to a busy road junction

“Shocking service food since new management took over”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

I used to go to this pub frequently when vising my family who live in the area, the food used to be very good and the staff very friendly.

I went there last weekend and it has changed - FOR THE WORSE. New managers have took over, we went there at 11am and basically waited 40 mins for the food, the waiter told us that they don't start cooking until 12!!!! Well thanks for telling us!!!! Anyway, when it did finally arrive it was absolutely shocking. A tuna and cucumber sandwich - no sign of cucumber and looked heavily processsed - was probably Tesco basic tuna - it was disgusting. THere were tiny burgers on a massive cheap bread roll.

They are going down the cheap route now - they don't realise that most of their loyal customers CAN tell the difference and just won't go there anymore. A wetherspoons meal would have been more enjoyable.

To top it off, their so-called manager came over and basically said "sorry..." then started clearning the table. Obviously badly trained and, again, cheap labour. You pay for what you get I guess.

I would never go here again and would NOT recommend to anyone - go to wetherspoons instead - staff are trained much better and the food is much better.

Room Tip: Book into another hotel.

“Two night break in February”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

Just returned from a two night break at the Red Lion in Todwick. We chose this hotel because it was quite close to the National Trust property at Clumber Park where we were planning to spend my wife's birthday. We booked on a bed and breakfast basis, but also had our evening meal there on both nights. All meals were very good and there was plenty of choice on the evening menu at a reasonable price. Accommodation was good, although perhaps a little "tired" in places and we were told that they were due for some alterations and updates later this year. Staff were excellent and very helpful. Probably the only downside was the plumbing, as it proved difficult to get enough hot water for a full bath, but here again, I understand that the plumbing is soon to be modernised. Overall a good value for money hotel.

Room Tip: Request a room in the older part of the hotel, which is the original building rather than a room in...

“Great value, great staff, excellent value for money.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

We booked a double room under the £9.95pp Bed and Breakfast offer, having stayed at many of this groups hotels before. On booking we were advised that they do have a function room which may be slightly noisy which we appreciated being told. Our check in was quick and efficient with a very friendly and welcoming receptionist. Although on such a bargain deal we were allocated a room at the back of the hotel (room 27) away from the rather noisy road. It had a king size bed, was very clean and had a perfectly adequate bathroom with shower over bath. We decided to have dinner, the bar staff were efficient and again so friendly and the waiting staff the same. We had the haddock ( a generous size) and the Gammon and eggs. Both arrived piping hot and nicely cooked. There was also a two meals for £9.95 menu which had a good choice plus you could add starters and desserts. A morning paper which we ordered was delivered to the room silently. Breakfast was as always very good. Juices, fresh fruit, cereals, muffins, yogurt etc plus a choice of cooked including Eggs Benedict, Full English and Smoked Salmon and scrambled eggs. The hotel is about 6 miles or so from Sheffield and Meadowhall. Would we return? You bet!! Even at twice the price.

Room Tip: Back of the hotel better than front on main road.
