“Beautiful building but disappointing marie-celeste-like hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 August 2009

We booked this hotel as part of a tour of Spain, and it was unfortunately the most disappointing hotel of all. Sad because the hotel itself is the most beautiful building, sympathetically restored and with a stunning setting next to the Embalse. Our room too was gorgeous, a "junior suite" with antique wooden furniture and a pretty white bathroom. However, thats where the good bit ended.
The hotel has this almost museum like atmosphere, where people speak in hushed tones ( if you even ever see other people - we only saw one other couple all stay! ) and we felt almost afraid to put things on the surfaces in the room, or sit on the terrace.
The bar, the restaurant and reception were always deserted and when we dared to ring the bell for service, although the staff were pleasant, we always felt as if we were interrupting something more important they were doing.
It is, as others have noted, situated at the edge of an "urbanizacion", a 10 euro taxi drive from the centre of Arcos, and there is nothing nearby in terms of bars or restaurants, so the choice is either to drive, or taxi to Arcos, or eat at the hotel.
We chose to eat out while we were there, as the menus seemed very "set" ( 3 courses only for 30 Euros ) and extremely expensive compared with local restaurants, plus the fact we would have been eating alone!
The first time we tried to eat breakfast at the hotel, after having spent some considerable time deciphering the various different options on offer in the book in our room, we couldn't actually find anyone to serve us, so gave up and ate out.
We tried again on our last morning, and after rattling cups very loudly, we were actually served, but almost wish we weren't. No choices were offered to us and breakfast consisted of 2 slices of yesterday's hard bread which we toasted ourselves, a small sticky pastry each, and coffee which was almost cold, and served unbelieveably with cold milk - unheard of in Spain!
It seems such a shame as this hotel has everything it needs to be fantastic - great situation, lovely rooms, nice pool and terrace - it just lacks something very basic - warmth and the desire to please the customers. Sadly I would not go back.

Dear Madam:
We read carefully your review and the opinions you got about our Hacienda.
First of al,l to apologize if we are given to you the impression of an isolated place, but the only thing we are trying is to give our clients what they are looking for when they come here: something different from the other hotels; silence, quietness, peacefullness and specially privacy.
We do not want to disturb the relax of our guests; to get "ambience" , noises, or people and childrem shouting or running is possible to obtain it in other places. That is the reason that you did not find the staff all around, but when you need us we are there ( if you ring the bells).
We also want to apologize as we never want that our costumer feel unconforttable in our house and of course, you can put your things in the floor or sit in the terrace.
Around us, there are more than 4000 people living habitually in the near residential area and there are a lot of things and places to eat, drink, or enjoy in between 500-1000 mtrs.( 2 restaurants at the border of the lake apart of us and 4 snack bars ), one Pub with night music,1 Paddle center, 1 Nautical Club for doing canoeing, sailing, kayak-polo, etc., and 1 Solar Boat which is making dayly trips every hour in the Lake and the Natural Park in front of the Hacienda.
During the month of august also we have Flamenco free concerts in the Sporting Club just at 800 mtrs. from the hotel.
The public bus stop is only at 350 mtrs. of the hotel and only cost 2€ to go up to Arcos; it is not neccesary to take a taxi, only in case thaqt you do not want to be adpted to the bus time table.
Specially in July and August, clients never stay at the hotel at night ( for dinner) as with this heat, the only right time to go out to do some visits to the region or to the nearest towns are in the afternoons/evenings.Maybe , that is the reason that you never saw people here.
We would like to thank you for your kindness and your nice words to our building, decoration, and staff and we feel so sorry that you do not think to come back to visit us.
If you change your idea, we would like to offer you a 25% discount of our official rates for the next 6 months; it is the minimum we can do to compensate your deception with us.
Kind regards.
Francisca

“disappoined, being swallowed by the suburbs”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2008

This is a wonderful building and once would have stood in wonderful countryside, unfortunately it is now surrounded on two sides by a creeping urbanization and its associated detritus. We tried to walk to the lake, but got lost in the urbanization and gave up. We were fortunate to have the winter suite which still has a view of the countryside. The hotel itself appears to have seen better days, every available surface and spare corner is occupied with faded, dusty artificial flowers. The soft furnishings are cheap and tired. The food including breakfast was awful, no fresh fruit! We went out to the garden a picked oranges ourselves. The staff were very friendly and helpful, I'm sad to say this is a hotel that has seen better days.

The Hacienda is a listed building dated from the 1485 ( XV century) ; it is declared Historic and Singular Mansion and for that reason it is untill now a nice property with a lot of antiques " no old" elements in the decoration, such as Isabelino Sofa, terracotta fabrics, hand painted ceramics from Talavera, curve and wood ceelings, etc.

When it was built in the midle Age, in this area there was not any building sorroundings as the property with 600 Has. was dedicated to the agriculture with forests, mountains and riverand in the center was located the Main Building.
With the time, the same that in other parts of the world, buildings have come nearest, although the property still has 300 Has. of agriculture fields with glorious views to the Lake, Guadalete River and its Natural Park with a private access by our garden specially for Auspreys bird's watchers.

For all those reasons we understand that the inconveniences paid to arrive to this quiet, relaxing retreat, like to cross a residential area and its "detritus" which cannot be seeing once here, are a very cheap price.

“Old style charm in a quiet setting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 October 2007

This is a 15th Century hacienda which has been converted to a hotel with sensitivity and attention to detail. It is 4 kilometers from Arcos overlooking the lake. There is a small lawn with a small pool (not heated). The co-owner was proud to show us around the facilities and when I mentioned taking a dip ( mad I know in October) pool towels appeared immediately. The wine list is fairly priced but bar drinks are a little pricey. The restaurant and bar are only for hotel guests so you have to choose your meal from the menu before 5 pm. The portions of meat in particular are large so unless you have a healthy appetite be prepared to skip dessert. Breakfast was a good selection of fruit, cheeses, cold meats etc. Very good base for touring the white villages. There are very few rooms so book in advance if possible, we had to spend one night in the other Hotel in the village not something you want to do believe me.

“On the 'down' curve...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2007

I bet this was great place at one time...but it's on its way out now..

The views are still gorgeous and the building is still something to savour, but there's a lot lacking.

Billed as a 'get-away-from-it-all' type of place.....that's true .....while you're in it...

It feels isolated...but...the 'burbs' are almost on the doorstep and they are not overly-pretty.

The Hacienda is 5km from the main town and the local restaurants in the surrounding holiday home sprawl were a bit rough on our scale...

The man-made lake and the river walk are pleasant but the isolation seems to attract the young scooter/biker types, road-testing their under-powered and noisy machines (even late at night)....which kind-of destroys the atmosphere.....if the Hacienda really had one!

Arcos itself is great with lovely restaurants, but they are a fair chalk away.

Eating-in the Hacienda was a strange affair...very (deathly) quiet (the staff's shoe-noises being the only distraction) and having to choose what you are going to eat 3 hours before you sit down for the meal was very off-putting. The food was middle-of-the-road and over-priced (E30 per head) and with the 'deal' being '3 courses'...too restrictive and bloating for 'nouvelle cusiners' like us....

Breakfasts are an 'extra' and neither cheap (min E6, max E18!!)nor exciting.

The staff are all pleasant and helpful, but not terribly visible or pro-active...(the bar was never 'manned' and you had to ring bells to make a face appear from the bowels of the place).

Even the owner preferred being busy on other matters to chatting-up the punters.

The pool and garden were, again, lovely, but limited...

....and nobody mention the all-pervading smell of cat-wee....

The staff certainly didn't !!

Very disappointing.

“nice place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 September 2007

The Hotel El Santiscal , a family residence, is exquisitely restored and a noble 15th-century house .
This beautiful fortified building has magnificent views to the surrounding landscape only a few kilometers away from Arcos de la Frontera.
We enjoyed our stay very much and service was very friendly
