When we were planning a Christmas holiday with the family in Hungary, we were told “then you must go skiing in Schladming, in Austria—that’s what everyone does!” Of course we had never heard of it, but it turns out to be a charming old town with a 4-mountain interconnect of slopes and lots of new snow making equipment. We found this hotel from web searches and we were so happy we did. It is run by the grandson of the founder (and his wife) and they are charming. I recommend the half-board plan because the dinner only cost 8 euro extra (above the bed and breakfast price) and we got a tasty 3-course meal each night (with 3 entrée choices, including one vegetarian offering.) The rooms are spotless and comfortable, the bathrooms are all modern. Ask for a room with a view of the town and the mountains! We are usually spoiled by a ski-in ski-out condo in the Utah, but that was no problem: the hotel minibus drives you 5 minutes to the high speed lift in the a.m. and picks you up on 5 minutes’ notice in the p.m. The town is great for shopping, and after-ski gluwein (hot spiced wine) and chestnuts, and is just a ten-minute walk across a picturesque bridge. And it was fun that we saw no other Americans the whole time we were there!
