“Luxury Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2011

This hotel has had excellent reviews in the past and there is not much more to add. The hotel has quite a grand feel about it and has everything - a very large dining room, plentiful food and so on. Swimming pool, masses of other sports activities that you can try for extra money - indeed, everything for a really great holiday.

Being ultra 'picky' there were a few things that we noticed and would have done differently.

We were initially a bit disappointed by our room - the holiday was an expensive one and the room didn't match up to the rest of the hotel. The room was a bit small with a very limited space to walk past the bed. Plenty of cuboards and a modern bathroom but no better a room than at a very much less expensive hotel. We had a balcony but with a view of the car park!

Austria has a 'hit and miss' system of non smoking rules. The bar area of the hotel has no smoking on one or two tables and then adjacent tables are smoking so in reality it is all a smoking area. Not sure what brand they smoke in Austria but you'll notice it!

The boot room and ski bus are very convenient for getting to the main planai lift station. If you were to miss the last morning bus at 9.55am it is not a difficult or particularly long walk to the lift station - having said that, of course, every step is awkward in ski boots and carrying skis and potentially dangerous if the pavements are icey. The latest return bus leaves the planai lift station at 4.30pm.

We enjoy wondering round the town after skiing having a nice cake and coffee (or drink) and soaking up the atmosphere. On another ocasion we would have paid for and used the ski depot at the planai lift station - then after skiing down we would have changed into our confortable shoes and been able to meander round. As it was by the time we had waited for the shuttle bus, (last one 4.30) got back to the hotel changed our shoes and walked out again it was a hour or so later and not the same at all. The ski bus was useful but in retrospect it would have been better to walk to the lift station and come and go at our own times and not wait for buses. Queues can be quite long at the lift station and by walking to it we could have chosen better times. So just a suggestion for others going there.

One thing that is quite fun is to print out your day's skiing from the machines just near the cash desk at the planai lift station.

We used the hotel internet - it cost 3 euros for every 24hour stint - wifi doesn't seem to be available or at least not for our room so the receptionist lent us an internet cable. Might be an idea to take your own cable in case there wasn't one available if you plan to use the internet.

We had a brilliant skiing week and were really lucky with the weather - sunny and clear. Our Crystal rep, Sarah, was bright and cheerful and we took advantage of the hosted skiing which did help with finding our way round the slopes. So all in all a great holiday. I would recomend the hotel and it would also be brilliant in the summer.

“ABSOLUTLEY SUPERB”

This was our 3rd visit to Schaldming and the Royer and it has improved every time we have been. Where do I start??

From the moment we arrived, the reception was reasonable, and our room was large at the end of a corridor with a balcony and views over the mountain. Lots of space, clean. Breakfast was - especially for the kids - superb with hot and cold options, buffet style: bacon and eggs, or cereal, or more exotic holiday treats like fresh fruit salad or chocolate and vanilla sponge cake. Had good quality afternoon tea and cake. Good choice of evening meals.

Now, the facillites....FANTASTIC! There are 3 brillaint, large swimming pools with water jets, slides, bubbles...you name it. Loved it. There are free tennis courts and mini-golf and a driving range (very good) and a fitness gym, rifle range, free bike hire...sqaush, pony riding, guided walks, bowling alley and inline skating. BRILL.

Very friendly staff, chatty. The manager came round to make sure we were enjoying our stay and was really welcoming. Brilliant all round. 5 STARS.

“amazing, amazing, fantastic”

i have never had the inclination to write a review before, but on returning from the Royer it would be rude not to!!.

Where do i start,,, from the moment i booked direct with the hotel i received lots of valueable advice regarding transfers, ski hire, ski school etc, every email was responded to swifty and effortlessly. The hotel was beautiful, huge rooms, very, very clean, sky tv, mini bar, bath robes (even for the kids). Bowling and pool with slide kept the kids happy and amused for hours. The food was amazing, with a kids menu if they are less adventurous, and if you ask for a menu in the morning for the evenings dinner and choose to dine elsewhere, you get a refund for the evening meal !! amazing service. I can not think of any critisisms of this hotel, the only thing i would change is, it would have been lovely to make a cup of tea but there wasnt a kettle! I almost feel guilty mentioning that. thankyou royer xx

“Austrian Hospitality at its Finest!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2009

What a holiday! We chose Sporthotel Royer for our ski trip with young children, based on the reviews here. Aside from all the merits such as location, amenities, facilities, and cuisine, the most notable aspect of this hotel is its hospitality. The warm welcome that we received from the entire staff, and all the cordial exchanges that we witnessed throughout the hotel made our stay there a truly memorable one.

The hotel is well situated, only a 3-5 minute walk or so from the Planai Cable Car Station and town centre. Our room was clean and comfortable. The bathroom and separate toilet were recently refurbished, evidently, to an immaculate standard. The indoor pool was very clean with under floor heating, and you could go down there wearing the complimentary bathrobes (they have small robes for children as well). The sauna was excellent.

And the cuisine. We chose the half-board option, and we were thoroughly impressed. Extremely well thought-out menus with beautiful presentation. Level of professionalism of the waiters and waitresses was a delight.

Because it was Christmas Time, there were special events every night, including a visit from Santa Clause! There seemed to be many regular guests, but we never felt excluded as the owners and staff went out of there way to make us feel included. The most welcomed guests at this hotel seemed to be children and senior citizens, the latter being treated with great respect -- a beautiful thing to watch.

We recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for a perfect holiday.
