Svinoya Rorbuer is THE place to stay if you're visiting Norway's Lofoten Islands. Located in Svolvaer the titular capital it is easily accessible by plane, ferry, and cruise line (Hurtigruten). We stayed in a modern two-bedroom rorbuer complete with kitchen and the most magnificent views of the town, harbor, sea and distant islands. The Svinoya Rorhuer also has THE best restaurant in the area and certainly in the town. It's a fantatsic place to saty and explore this eerily beautiful area.

We stayed at Svinoya Rorbuer for 4 nights and had a superb time.
We were a family group of 4 adults and were originally put into a small fishermans cabin, which is not what we had paid for, so we complained and were put into cabin 20 which was spacious over two floors and with a lovely log fire (what we were expecting!!).
The location is stunning and you can spend several days just walking around Svinoya Rorbuer and the neighbouring town ( Svolvaer). We also visited Henningsvaer by bus (well recomended) and Kabelvag by taxi. We also visited the Magic Ice Museum in Svolvaur which is worth going to.
Breakfast at Svinoya Rorbuer is excellent but we only had dinner in the restaurant once (first night) as it was a very limited menu (and didn't change) and hugely expensive (1 course about £70 per person). So we went to the supermarket in Svolvaer and cooked our own meals for the rest of the stay. This was great as the cabin was a delight to be in and really where we wanted to be when we were not out walking around in the snow.
From Svinoya Rorbuer we took a ship up to Tromso, so we were on board for about 15 hours and it was a superb way of seeing the Norwegian Fjords. However I would not want to have spent any longer on the boat.
Top tip for Svinoya Rorbuer would be to take tea, coffee, coffee mate and some biscuits with you for your first evening there. The kitchen in the cabin was very well equipped but we really needed a cup of tea / coffee on arrival!!. Also it is great to have a cup of tea / coffee prior to walking to the restaurant for Breakfast.

Rorbuer (plural of rorbu) were the huts where fishermen (descriptive rather than sexist!) lived during the season. Some have been created more recently specifically for tourism but those at Svinoya are the real thing, as proved by a photo in reception.

Svolvaer is the principal town of the Lofoten Islands, where the Hurtigrute (Norwegian Coastal Voyage) calls early evening in both directions. Svinoya is on an island joined to the rest of Svolvar by a long bridge.

The complex has a splendid, though unpretentious, restaurant and breakfasts can be bought there to take away, providing quite enough for a picnic lunch as well.

There are apartments, whole or half huts, for two people upwards. The kitchen is adequate for light meals and there is a sitting room, bathroom and separate bedroom.

The price doesn't work out very differently from a hotel but it's such a change and really feels quite exciting. The surrounding scenery is spectacular.
