“Not worth 4 stars...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

We visited the hotel as a couple during the 1st weekend of February and we both agreed we wouldn't recommend it to a friend.

We arrived around 2300 on Friday due to heavy snowfall and once we checked in we headed for the room hoping for some rest and warmth. If only! The room was more cold than the car drive had been and it took nearly an hour before we could heat it up: nobody had bothered put on the heat and it was -14 outside!!!!

Not a very promising start for the weekend, but then again neither was the fact they didn't have a room with a double bed: all their rooms come with twin beds. We made do but from a Resort place you kinda expect more.

Breakfast in the morning was ok, nothing spectacular but not bad either and we really enjoyed our visit tot he sauna and pool. The sauna we paid extra (about 10 euros pp) and was quite intimate and fun for both of us. The pool was also good to have, yet we would have liked bathrobes in the room rather than having to put on our clothes after the dive.

For the evening we had booked a 3-course dinner which we had no idea was preset and if you wanted a free choice from the menu you had to pay 6 euros extra pp. The first course was goose-liver pate which seriously disturbs me as an idea and they were kind enough to change it to a pumpkin salad with no extra charge while my friend wanted to avoid the salmon for main course and they gladly allowed him to switch to duck. However the service was EXTREMELY slow, the waiter was chatting up some other customers for 15 mins and all our attempts to get the next course were simply ignored. Eventually, after he was done talking and returned to his post, and still ignored us, I stood up and went to him to ask for some service! Similarly when we wanted to get the bill we were ignored till I started getting off my seat. We weren't exactly impressed though the food tasted decent.

We stayed 2 nights and they didn't change the bedsheets after the 1st night, however this came as little surprise: but after having dealt with a cold room the first night, water running on the floor during the shower because the separator wasn't right and the obvious need of a renovation for the room why should we expect the sheets to be changed after a single night???

Walls were paper thin, I could hear all activity on the corridor and the neighbors rooms, the room smelled musty if we left the bathroom door opened (bathroom had no proper ventilation and soundproof) and overall we were only too happy to get back to our apartment.

Room Tip: Get another hotel.

“Nice for a getaway ...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2011

The Bad Boekelo is great for a getaway for those people wanting to be in the country side, however it is a bit far for business trips. The rooms are spartan and more than once I felt that the room was not serviced properly! The staff are excellent and are really helpful. The Mood restaurant serves up really great cuisine during the week, but on the weekend you can only eat at the really overpriced buffet - a disappointment after such excellent cuisine during the week. The swimming pool is great but heavy chlorinated, so beware those of you who might have s skin reaction to this. If you are keen to getaway from it all, enjoy walks or cycle rides in the lush forests, then this is the place to go! Excellent for children.

“Strange mix of design without a soul”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 September 2011

What is missing at Bad Boekelo is a soul. The soul of a building, of interior decoration and design. The soul in food. Fortunately, the staff makes up for this as much as they can. They are helpful, kind and good humored.

The hotel is beautifully located. Great area to relax, take a stroll and enjoy the sound of silence. Unless you are planning to spend some time in your suite or try to take a nap. In that case, you will have to prepare to face the continuous sound of running water. And it is running loud and fast to who knows where.

So, great place to stay when planning a business trip. It's clean, recently renovated (without that soul) and you can get you head right into or out a cloud taking a hike in the forest. Just don't expect to be thrilled by it.

Room Tip: The suites have seperate living room and balcony

“Lovely apart/hotel where service is just one big smile!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 September 2011 via mobile

We stayed a weekend with 2 children of 5 and 6 early August, which included breakfast.
We had a 2 bedroom apartment, which was roomy and comfortable, but the TV was very old which let and otherwise reasonably good upgrade of an old complex down.
The service is amazing, particularly if you are used to the less than interested Dutch experience elsewhere. The hotel has a kids club for a few hours a day (free) and a kid's dinner (E7.50) so that parents can enjoy the lovely restaurant or have a drink on the very attractive and comfortable terrace.
Shame the wifi is not free.
There are lovely touches for (big) kids everywhere.
The pool is lovely and clean. You can even do your laundry ina launderette, at very asonable price, considering hotel prices.
The location is in the woods whihc is lovely, but it is a bit hard to find.
We would probably go back.

“Design is better than experience. Retreat get away”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 July 2011

Fantastic 70s design is overshadowed by quite a basic finish on guest rooms and hotel public spaces. Obscure pieces of art feel lost in the architecture.

Stunning woodland setting makes you instantly calm and rooms with balconies are a treat to take in the pine fresh air.

Breakfast food is plentiful. Gorgeous rye breads and nice cold cheeses and meats. Abundance of croquettes (!) and shame the coffee is weak.

Very few staff but ones that are around are pleasant.

Lovely hopscotch style floor bells are a fun way to enter the hotel.
