“Central location, decent price”

The hotel is in the city centre, walking distance to the main attraction – The Underground Christmas market. For two nights, it was a good stay, and breakfast had both hot and cold food. Another plus: the bathroom for our room was spacious and had a bathtub (but no cosmetic mirror).
The list of minuses is a bit longer:
- only plastic glasses provided (in the bathroom)
- the heater in the bathroom was only partially functioning
- the double bed is made of two single beds put together
- the heating is off during the night
- in the hotel's Directory they advertise that the Reception can provide what you need to make coffee and tea, however they only provided a dusty boiler – but it is better than nothing, there is a shop just on the other side of the road where you can buy tea, instant coffee and hot chocolate

The hotel has a parking lot behind, which is not directly accessible from the hotel (it's about 200 m walk).

“excellent value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2011

Location is excellent for christmas markets.Hotel staff very attentive and friendly. The rooms are basic but very clean. Meals are plentiful with a choice of main course and vegetarian options always available with fresh salads and vegetables.

“Nice location but ...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 October 2011

Location under a castle is perfect, very close....even to a church. The hotel is a bit old styled, my first impresion was that it is preferably used by elderly. We got room no. 214 - approached it through labyrinth of narrow corridors - was of standard size. Very calm, vith church view - through dirty windows.Double bed meant 2 connected single beds. That was not so comfortable. Avoid sleeping close to edge - you can easily fall down. Bathroom was a bit stinky (rag) but was equipped by whirlpool!
Breakfast was pleasant, with very good pastry.
Just information, that there is free coffee in lobby, was confusing. You have to pay for it....

“GOOD VALUE BUT A COUPLE OF NIGGLES”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 August 2011

We got quite a good 'inc-breakfast' deal and, overall, had a reasonable stay. Our room was one of a handful of motel-style rooms with an outside corridor, rather than in the main building. One advantage of these rooms was that they had aircon, which I suspect the standard rooms wouldn't have. The only bad side to this was that the outside route to the room was rather slippery when it was raining; I made an unexpected slide along the floor on one occasion.

The 'double' bed was actually two wide singles pushed together with separate duvets which made for a roomy sleeping space with no problems of a partner stealing the cover! The room wasn't particularly large, but did have a desk near the window which was handy for using the laptop. (Free Wi-Fi, by the way.)

Our main niggles were: -

1) The hotel only did an evening meal if you were staying on half-board basis. Apparently casual diners could ask if they had any meals available, but the dining hours were rather restrictive. Luckily, Valkenburg is full of a wide variety of restaurants and bars that do food and they're all close to the hotel.

2) The hotel information folder spoke of free tea and coffee facilities but when we enquired we were directed to a machine in reception which cost €1.50 a time.

3) The car parking arrangements are a pain. The hotel has an agreement with another hotel nearby to use some of their spaces but we found one day that all the allocated ones were taken. Luckily it was late in the day so we could use the large public car park right outside. (This is restricted to 2 hours maximum from about 10am to 8pm.) When we reported to reception that the space we had paid for wasn't there we were made to feel it was our fault. They did refund the €8.50 charge for the day we couldn't park, so it wasn't too bad.

To sum up, it wasn't perfect but we would consider staying again.

“Better than some reviews suggested”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 May 2011

We stayed at this hotel as our base for the singing concerts our choir were performing in that part of the Netherlands. Arriving at 9pm we were greated by attentive staff and guided to a lavish buffet specially laid on to cope with our late arrival. During our 5 day half board stay the food was excellent.
The rooms we had were all well appointed but not lavish. After long days rehearsing and singing the comfortable beds were much appreciated.
A mention for other singers/choirs thinking of booking this hotel, book a conference room in advance for rehearsals, they have excellent acoustics.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front of the hotel noisey at wekends.
