“Terrificly bad”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

This place is mainly run by apprentices, which in itself can be fine if they are guided well. Now there lies the problem. My husband asked for an aspirin and the reception said they couldn't give it because of liability issues. An aspirin... We ended up having to go to a night doctor and all-night pharmacy about 12 km away to get... an aspirin. It turned out my husband had a fever, so the recipy was aspirin, vitamin and a good night's sleep.

If that was the only thing, I would have frowned my eyebrows and left it at that. That same night, however, we were submerged in the basses from the pub in the cellar. The app on the iPhone registered 49dB in our room. At midnight we telephoned reception to ask when we could sleep, they told us they would end it immediately. At 00:45 hours we tried to call again, as the music still continued at the same levels. We could not reach reception, we got a cell phone number and its voicebox. So we walked to reception in stead, only to find 2 staff members happily talking to one another. Finally the music ended around 01:00 hours and we could sleep.

Still, if that was the only thing, we could maybe frown our eyebrows and think it is an unfortunate coherence of incidents.

But when we used the bathroom the next day, we were shocked: months of dirt was piled up in the air suction, fungus was in the rubber joints in the bathroom, tiles were opened up and stuffed with filth and there were silverfish running around.

We then realised that the incidents were in fact signs of the total mismanagement of the hotel.

We went to breakfast about 15 minutes before the formal latest moment given by the hotel, only to find that it was already being taken away. We realise we were the only ones to have breakfast at that time, but we did however pay for it. We were told by staff that we were running a bit late and we should really be in time next time... is unacceptable.

Alas we have nothing positive to report on this hotel... it is just terrificly bad.

Room Tip: Get a room above reception, it is the new part. Small rooms, but far away from the pub.

“Wolf in sheep's clothes”

Do not be fooled by this hotel's grand facade or website, it does not at all reflect the grossly outdated, noisy and dirty rooms that lay behind it. The noise of neighboring rooms and the hotel's ground floor pub carries through its entire structure, keeping you awake until 1:00 AM. Or even longer if one doesn't complain to reception (which doesn't help before then anyway.)

Staff mainly consists of trainees and even though they sincerely try, it just doesn't cut it. Reception does not answer the phone after 24:00 hours, it switched to the voice box of a mobile phone.

There are so many other things wrong with this hotel, I do not even know how to make one story out of it. Take for instance the worn down furniture in the restaurant: it looks outdated but technically okay, once one sits in it, it says it all. Its lifetime cycle has been passed yolks ago.

It is amazing that Fletcher dubbed this hotel to the best it has: makes you wonder what other horror stories are out there...

Room Tip: DO NOT get a room in the old part (behind the new building).

“Marvellous place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 December 2011

We stayed here as a departure base for several visits in the region: Amsterdam - Dordrecht e.o. We experienced a very friendly staff - clean hotel room - and a great quality of meals. We eat what the kitchen proposed and we really were amazed of the good taste and serving of the meals.

“Awful - and do NOT use a BONGO here!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 August 2011

Unfortunately, we booked a "Do Not Disturb" Bongo Package here....and we were very disappointed. The hotel reservation staff is extremely inflexible and would not move our reservation in spite of us calling a WEEK before. Secondly, our room was quite mediocre, dated, and tired. The one good thing is that our room was quite large. Also important to note: the hotel allows (barking) pets, so we had a dog stay one room away from us, who was put on the (shared) balcony and barked constantly. Breakfast is very, very sad - old bread, cold hard boiled eggs, and mediocre lunch meat. I forgot to mention: the "bottle of bubbles" promised to us by the hotel was a single-serve, room temperature cheap wine with two plastic glasses -- clearly, the hotel follows the letter of the law but does it in the cheapest, easiest way possible and doesn't care what the guests think once they've paid.

For this excessive price, you're better served even going to a Van der Valk! I'd recommend looking for one of the charming seaside hotels in the actual little town - the main road that faces the ocean is called Koningin Astrid Boulevard and there are dozens of delicious, fairly-priced restaurants and cafes within walking distance. We loved it there - and spent as little time as possible in the hotel.

Room Tip: Don't get a room here at all!

“4 star hotel with 2 star rooms”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 April 2010

An attractive hotel from the outside.

The reception is bland but the staff very accommodating and friendly, the dining and bar areas are well laid out and the general decoration is good, however the rooms are small, the showers only trickle and you feel as though you are staying in a different hotel. Quite why they added a balcony to the room is a mystery.

We intended to eat in the restaurant but it was a set meal which did not appeal, so despite a long day walking round Keukerhof we had to drive 5 miles into town to find a restaurant which begs the question why not stay in town in the first place.
