“Don't believe the web-site”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 August 2007

BEWARE - Don't believe the hype on the web-site for this hotel - it just doesn't live up to it at all.
We booked to stay at this hotel as a bit of a last minute thing, but having looked at the web-site it seemed to offer quite a lot in terms of facilities.
Upon arrival (quite late due to a flight delay!) we were informed that our booking had been transfered to the adjacent hotel block, which has its own name and reception but in reality appears to have been taken over by the Setar. This adjacent building had the feeling of somewhere that had been pulled out of mothballs to fit in some extra guests - there were unlit areas in the main lobby, with dust sheets over the sofa's etc.
Our room was small, with furnishings that looked like they had come out of the 1970's, but it at least was clean, and remained that way with a good daily maid service.
Breakfast the next morning was very limited, and the doors to the room were closed promptly at 9:30, although this seemed to relax to 10am later in the week.
The hotel boasts floodlit tennis courts and 5-a-side football pitches, but all of these are in a terrible state of dis-repair, most are totally unusable, and the gates to them are padlocked. It must have been a wonderful place once upon a time, but not any more - it is crying out for some serious renovation.
Dining at the hotel - not very inspiring choices on the main hotel buffet, but the Kontiki Pizzaria on site (not owned by the hotel) is good, if a little limited in terms of choice, and be prepared for some pretty slow service - they get very busy and don't seem to have enough staff, although they are friendly enough and try hard.
Outside of the hotel there is little in the way of alternative dining options - there is another smaller hotel just down the road and a small complex with another pizzaria and a gelateria, both of which were good, but again if you are travelling in August, book your table early - they get full up pretty quickly with locals.
The place was dominated by Italian tourists, along with a large party of teenagers from Italy who were on a holiday camp at the hotel - this meant some pretty loud music from the stage adjacent to the pool area, which was probably the only bit of the hotel which lived up to the billing - an excellent pool for swimming in, but families beware - it is 5ft at the shallow end and 10ft at the deep end, and everyone has to wear a swimming cap - no cap - no pool !!

Sardinia itself is a nice place, but the whole area surrounding the Setar looks and feels very poor and run down compared to some of the other places we found when exploring with our hire car, and the beaches do live up to the billing of being able to rival the Carribean in places, you just have to get out there and find them.

Don't be put off visiting Sardinia, just look for a better place to stay.

“Value for Money”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 June 2006

We met some fellow travellers at the hotel, who said that this site had given the Hotel Setar a bad review. However, I have not found the review on this site, so can only assume that they were looking at something else.

The hotel staff were very friendly, the food was excellent and the cost was very reasonable. Beds were made every day and the towels changed every day.

We hired a tandem one day and a car for two days - again very reasonable and all hired on site.

The hotel provided breakfast in the price and this consisted of a choice of cereal, fruits, cheeses, hams, rolls, croissants, both sweet and savoury and coffee, tea and juices.

A reasonably priced restaurant provided excellent meals in the evening if you chose to eat in.

The only down side was on our last day we decided to stay at the hotel pool side and were told we had to wear a hat, which obviously we had not taken and they did not provide.

I am not a swimmer so it did not bother me, but if you are take a cap!

There is no beach as such, but you can find some fabulous beaches nearby, but you do need a car. We went up into the mountains and the scenery is breathtaking, lovely flowers and on our way to one beach off the mountain area to the east, we see Flamingos.

All in all a wonderful place and area to be if you don't want to be in the normal tourist area.

“Very strange atmosphere!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 March 2006

Two-centre holiday in Sardinia with 2 day stopover in Rome en route we put together ourselves booking flights, carhire, hotels direct on internet. We stayed here for 4 nights B&B after driving down from Alghero, having spent 5 days there. As a base, we wanted a beach hotel near but not in Cagliari (a large traffic clogged town).

Despite it being July the hotel had an out-of-season feel about it. Very 1970s with no atmosphere and hardly anyone around. Huge dark foyer with nothing in it except a few bits of old furniture. Room was fine but we had to move next door as the aircon unit on balcony was leaking water. Small breakfast dining room was on top floor and buffet breakfast was basic, 2* standard.

The huge pool was over 5 feet deep in the 'shallow' end, that and having to wear horrendous swimming cap put me right off! No childrens pool. There was some sort of business group thing going on so felt more like a city hotel than a holiday hotel. The 'al fresco' Pizzeria restaurant mentioned by other reviewers was this hotel's saving grace. It overlooked the pool and, as there wasn't anything else around locally, we ate there most nights. Very good, reasonably priced varied menu inc steaks, chicken etc - not your usual pizza joint. I read that it's not owned by the hotel, so that figures! Always a good sign that there were large groups of Italian families eating there most nights.

After Alghero and beautiful area around we were not very impressed with Poetto beach (very towny) or Cagliari but there are some fab beaches on south east coast - almost caribbean! We loved Sardinia and would return but not to this hotel/area.

“Don't Go!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2005

We decided to go to sardinia for our honeymoon and we wouldn't recommend the Setar to anybody. 4star it isn't. We were told that we would be picked up from the airport via hotel bus:this doesn't exist so expect to pay 30-50 euros each way and agree a price before you get in the taxi. The hotel is also meant to have a gym, jacuzzi, tennis /football courts(need a lot of repair) sauna, beauty room and pool side bar etc but they don't. The shallow end in the swimming pool i had to stand on tip toes and i'm 5ft 8! Oh and you also have to wear a swimming hat (one thing i forgot to pack in my honeymoon suitcase!)The beach is meant to be 5 minutes walk...to a grotty piece of sand 8ft square. The poetto beach and vallisimus beaches are ok. Poetto is about 20 mins bus ride you can get a hotel mini bus scheduled at main desk. Vallisimus is an hour away on a coach whic you can catch outside the hotel. If you get the 8pm bus back you won't probably get a seat because the African sellers get this bus back to the city. The sellers are ok just say no thanks and they'll leave you alone. The food at the Setar is limited, breakfast is your normal continental. We met some other British people who were half board and they said they had the same food every night-cold meat, cold veg. The resturant is also limited, pizzeria is nice and also cheap but the menu in the other part of the resturant mainly consists of pasta with fish and i mean fish with everything! We opted to go b&b and luckily there is a supermarket just around the corner. They have lovely bread/tomatoes cheap crisps and a joint of horse hanging up if you're very hungry! The American bar reminded us of Faulty Towers with Basil and Cybil the bar owner is lovely although his wife seemed to have constant PMT. Try not to have a room underneath the resturant as they bbq the fish there and the smoke/smell will end up in your room on your clothes...not for the amourous unless you have a fish fettish! Hardly anybody speaks English, they learn french at school.Luckily we knew enough french/italian to get by. In the city there is a nice ice cream shop fantastic assortment and very yummy. We went around the time of the italian holiday so most things were shut, we ended up at the archieological museum (not my first thing to do on my honeymoon tick list) it's ok if you're into that. There is also the elephant tower. Bus cards have to be bought so that you can travel on the bus these can be bought at the hotel 'shop'. Night life is also limited as to get to poetto beach bars will set you back another 20-30 euros each way, hence we went to the American bar most nights. If you hire a car take out holiday insurance/life insurance etc as 6 people died in the week we were there in car accidents. If i were you i'd got to kefalonia it's beautiful and people are very friendly especially in argostoli the city.
