“Nice hotel but needs to be "freshened up"”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 August 2011

The room was quite small and the furniture looked quite old (also in style). The bathroom on the contrary was spacious and comfortable.
The main disappointment is the swimming pool which is only indoor. We were there on a sunny week end in May and we spent an afternoon in the sunbeds in the garden, very quiet and with great views (even though it's right in front of the street to the main entrance of the hotel, which is not ideal)
Breakfast is not great considering it's Italy. The buffet didn't have a great choice and the quality was poor.
The staff doesn't meet the standards of a 4 star hotel (while having breakfast you could hear waiters complaining about their boss, the service was quite slow etc)
There is a shuttle service which takes you to the hotel in camogli and back, you need to book it at the reception.
We liked the hotel and the price was reasonable (approx EUR 139 per double room) but if we were to go back we would stay in the hotel of the same chain in camogli, which is overlooking the sea and has an outdoor swimming pool.

“Great view BUT urgently needs refreshment, including staff.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 July 2011

Great view. Very mediocre rooms. Poor service and advice. But the WORST of all: being in Italy (country know for its good coffee and cappuccino) and for breakfast getting yourself a coffee or cappuccino out of a MACHINE, just like on highway restaurant!!! Couldn't just believe it!! I lived for 9 years in Italy and love the coffee and food, but definitely not at the Portofino Kulm!!! I stopped later in Santa Marguerita and had a good cappuccino, croissant and fresh orange juice at a nice bar downtown... Fortunately didn't experience dinner!!!

“Beautiful property, friendly staff, delicious restaurant!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 July 2011

My husband, four-month-old son and I stayed here on our way back home from France to Naples, Italy. We only stayed one night, but will certainly be back. From the moment we arrived, everyone was extremely helpful and friendly. The views from the rooms and grounds are beautiful and the hotel is stunning on its own.

Even at our very nice dinner, the staff was kind enough to play with our fussy baby and make us feel comfortable. We only speak a little Italian, which was no problem as most all staff spoke English.

The room we stayed in wasn't fancy, but was clean, nice and had everything we needed (including very good a/c which can be hard to find sometimes!)

What a remarkable place to stay! We'll be back to do some hiking around next time!

“Great location but not many guests”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 July 2011

The hotel could do a lot more with such a location and view... the hotel room was not especially nice furnished, the bed too hard. The swimmingpool was inside, the restaurant area had too small windows to enjoy the fabulous views... the hotel needs definitely some refreshing... service was good, breakfast okay.

“Romantic hotel with old world charm and fabulous view”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2011

This hotel is on top of a mountain overlooking the sea and quaint villages. It has all amenities including a wonderful swimming pool, spa, and excellent restaurant serving continental cuisine. It also has a free shuttle that takes you down to the rustic fishing village turned beach resort with its black shale beach. Their sister hotel offers discounted chairs and umbrellas for Portofino Kulm guests. Breakfast is mostly pastries, yogurt, cheese and fruit but they are happy to make you eggs of your choice and rashers of bacon or ham if you request them for nothing extra. Also they have wonderful cappuccino. THere are also a number of hiking paths from the hotel. The staff is charming and gracious and goes out of its way to make your visit pleasant.
