“Wonderful Staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 December 2010

Great staff, there was a mix up over our reservation and they handled it like pros. The rooms were very clean and cleverly decorated as well as comfortable. Breakfast was elegantly served and a great start to the day. It was the best stay of our trip.
You will need a car as it is a little out of the way but they do have free parking. and easily accesable to the main road. Great base from which to explore Tuscany. Only gripe that you have to pay to go on line, a 4 star hotel should consider including this.
Would return to stay again.

“Good base - horrendous decor!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 August 2010

I am surprised that this hotel has a 4 star rating. The buildings are modern and characterless. The bedrooms, while being spacious, very clean and reasonably comfortable, are dark and dingy with clashing colour schemes and cheap looking furniture covered with fake gilt and marble. This decor extends into the public areas and restaurant. and is extremely oppressive The television had only one international channel which was German. The pool is very good and suitable for adults and children (though not toddlers) alike. The gardens are pleasant, though the hotel lies between a fairly busy road and a dual carriageway so there is constant, though not overly loud traffic noise. This cannot be heard in the bedrooms. The breakfast is good with a reasonable amount of choice, although the coffee is very poor for italy. The outside eating area overlooking the gardens and pool is very pleasant, but the inside restaurant suffers from the same decor as the rest of the hotel. We ate in the restaurant once and the food was very good, though expensive compared to other restaurants in the area. Staff were generally friendly, though not especially helpful when asked the best place to hire a car. If you choose to accept the "free" wine tasting, it will result in a hard sell. The hotel is in an excellent location for visiting some of the best sights in Tuscany, such as Siena, Florence, San Gimignano and the Chianti area but you will need your own transport Taxis to the railway station in Siena cost 25-35 euros. Monteriggioni itself (about 2 miles away) is a beautifully preserved medieval town with stunning views of the surrounding area. We ate in all of the four restaurants. All were pretty much equally good although the prices varied quite a lot,

“The staff are exceptional”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 August 2009

We stayed at this hotel for 10 days to celebrate my husband's 50th Birthday. We went with his brother and partner. While looking forward to going we were a little concerned about the location and service after reading other trip advisor reports. This proved to be unnecessary. The hotel is a few minutes from Monterriggioni and about 15 minutes from Siena.
The rooms and facilities were excellent. We ate in the hotel 4 times. We stayed in the hotel for my husband's 50th and had a brilliant evening. All the staff from the reception desk, waiters/waitresses, cleaners and drivers were exceptional. Nothing was too much trouble at any time.
The only negative of this holiday was our visit to their restaurant in Monterriggioni. While the food was very good the service was appalling. They were more interested with getting you fed and out so they could have more customers. We did inform staff at the hotel, we said the staff from the restaurant would benefit from spending time with the hotel staff to learn how to treat their customers!
Anyway this was a small blip in our holiday, the hotel and visiting Siena was our main focus and they both definitely lived up to our expectations.

“Don't expect to get a drink from the bar!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 August 2008

We arrived at the hotel for a 7 night stay after 3 nights in Venice & 4 in Florence (both 5 star hotels - fantastic). It is unfair to compare their quality with Il Piccolo. The first night we decided to eat in the restaurant, what a big disappointment - the menu was very limited and we found that it was not changed frequently. Once the Manager realised that we were not going to have all the courses with expensive wine, he completely ignored us and hovered around a select few of the guests frequently filling their glasses and chatting. He was very abrupt when he brought us the bill to sign. The waiters were extremely friendly and pleasant but seemed to be constantly under pressure. After this eperience we decided to eat out for the rest of the week, something we do not regret! One night we were 1 of 3 couples from the hotel eating at the local bar,(not recommended) what does that say about Il Piccolo? On the last 2 nights we decided to go back to the bar for a drink, the first time we waited for 30 minutes before a waiter came over apologisng but saying that they were very busy, he brought us our drinks and as an apology he gave us nuts, crisps & olives. The last night we only waited 20 minutes before we gave up. We asked the guy on reception if the bar was open and he said it was. We were offered free drinks in our room by a member of staff for our inconvenience so we returned to the room and 20 minutes later 2 drinks arrived - not sure what they were but certainly not what we had requested - this time with even bigger bowls of nuts than the previous night! Speaking to staff it became apparent that there were managerial problems at the hotel with far too many guests, it seemed the focus for the hotel was all on the Restaurant. It is a shame that they are having such problems as the hotel is perfectly situated in Central Tuscany. I would just re-iterate that the staff that served us were very pleasant and helpful but they need support from the Management

“Try a different restaurant in Monteriggioni”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 August 2008

Pretty setting and accommodating staff BUT overpriced and not-very-good food. We asked for a fresh fruit plate (which was not on the menu) and they were happy to accommodate us, but the rest of the items we ordered, primarily from the appetizer menu as it was mid-afternoon, were not very good and extremely overpriced. Pates tasted old, fresh tomatoes were not good and bread was very stale. Definitely don't recommend.
