Stayed there August 2011 so, yes, this review is about 5 months late. This is our second stay at this hotel. We stayed in it before in 2009 when it was called Imperial Rhodes, so generally a lot of points here are comparisons to our previous stay.
Check-in was quite efficient. We had arrived late due to flight issues and apparently this time the hotel was full. We had booked two 'Superior Sea View' rooms and were given rooms on the third floor. It is well worth booking a Sea View room rather than a 'Classic' mountain view room which is a really bad view as the hotel is built into the mountain so the room feels quite 'stuck' (tried it last time when we asked to extend our stay).
The view wasn't terrible, but it wasn't perfect. A deluxe room will give that perfect view advertised. I prefer this view to the 9th floor as it sees more foliage and the pools as well as the sea. The room furniture has been replaced and much love towards it. Only downside is there is a lot less concealed storage available within the room and the bathroom scales seem to have disappeared.
Breakfast was good (though slightly repetitive) but it was a shame that they stopped serving fresh orange juice as they did before. When the waiters were asked, they said that the machine had broken down and when they attempted to switch back to the fresh OJ, people complained about it. Unsure why people would prefer Tang over fresh Mediterranean OJ but that was the case. Dinner was of a good standard as well. Restaurant service from the waiters was impressive, efficient and extremely professional. Thank you for expanding the outdoor restaurant seating area (in fact for also moving the entrance there) it was great move and, of the 8 days we spent there, we only ate indoors twice.
The gym has been renovated and is quite good for a short workout but it lacks a little...
Housekeeping was great. Though there were a few minor language barriers, they do their best to keep the guests happy and are extremely attentive to their duties, always smiling and very accommodative. The hotel was kept very clean and they can be seen every morning scrubbing the lobby top to bottom. Bless, if they could reach the ceilings, they would have redefined white.
The pool area was great, as always, and the beach was good though a little too pebbly at the start, but great once you swim into the sea.
The animation team did attempt to be there all day, but they were certainly understaffed as their presence wasn't as clear as they should have. One morning, they attempted to start the pool aerobics class, but when realising that only two people were interested, after a 60 second run around the pool area, they cancelled it. They could have started and eventually other people would have joined, couldn't they?
Same applied to some of the basic unnoticeable things. The lobby's skylight has electronic shades. Though those were adjusted continuously in 2009 to the direction of the sun, this year, they were left untouched. Why?
In general it's a lovely hotel. I would go back to the same hotel again if I were to go back to Rhodes. But this is our 3rd time in the past 5 years, I think it's time to move on.
