“O.K. for one night Merida stopover”
Arriving without reservation we were welcomed by a friendly, readily dispensing information about Merida sights, trilingual receptionist who surprised us with a 60Euro rate for the room plus 7Euro for on-site, secure parking. Curbside parking is an option. The Roman Amphitheater and major Roman sites, incl. the museum of Roman artifacts are but a short two blocks walk away.
We were assigned a quiet, non-smoking standard room, somewhat on the smallish side for a 4-star hotel. It came with a queen size bed, stocked mini-bar, desk, TV with some English channels, and A/C that stayed on during the night. Were it not for banging doors up and down the hallway, double pane windows and the carpeted floor would make for a quiet room. The carpet appeared well past the due date for a shampoo. What we found offensive in our room was a penetrating odor as if mother were cooking cabbage down below. The large, tiled floor to ceiling bath room with modern fixtures, tub with shower curtain, and the obligatory bidet was clean and stocked with adequate towels and toiletries.
The hotel deserved a star for the delicious food served in the restaurant. We chose the price fixe menu of the day which included a bottle of regional wine, all at a very reasonable cost. Breakfast was equally satisfactory. All in all, while not perfect in every regard, the Hotel Velada Merida fit the bill for a one night stopover.
