“Hard to locate, but excellent Parador !”

We stayed three nights, early November 2011. The room was excellent. The breakfast, incredibly complete. The Staff very helpful and cordial.
If you drive your car, you MUST get a very detailed route to get to the street in the back of the main entrance. In fact, you will get to a light and call from the phone at the post to get the hotel to lift a couple of barriers in the middle of the street.
I failed to get a detailed map...and ended up stopping a cab and asking him to convey me to the Parador (and of course, it cost me a fare).

“Old world charm not apparent inside!”

We were looking forward to revisiting this recently restored Parador, but found that it too like most of the other recently updated Paradors was lacking in character and cuisine. Only the reception desk, bathroom in our room and breakfast made us realize that we were indeed in a Parador, that is until the usual large bill was presented to us after two nights.

We ate nothing in the restaurant that could not have been prepared and presented in many country restaurants in Extremadura with at least twice the appeal.

Save your money and the tricky access (please be sure to read Parador website access notes) by taking some other hotel located outside the Caceres old town zone.

Room Tip: Palacio de Carvajal, which houses the local tourist office in the old town is both an interesting bu...

“"Lacking Charm" is a bit harsh”

Stayed in this Parador in 1994 or 1995, and again in Nov 2011 so I feel well placed to judge the impact of the recent renovations.

"Lacking charm" is harsh. The old Parador had lots of unused spaces, was a bit cold and echoey. Didn't feel comfortable in it, unlike the many others that I've stayed in.

The renovations have transformed the comfort levels of the place *as a hotel* whilst keeping the building alive as a cultural monument and an exemplar if the city and region.

I'd happily stay here again.

“Great Location, Lacking Charm”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 October 2011

Caceres is definitely worth a visit as an amazing example of a preserved walled city. And the location of this hotel is perfect for exploring it. But if you decide to stay here be sure and get instructions on how to get there as entry into the old city is very tricky. We were fortunate that we spoke the language and were advised where to press the bell that lowered the bollards and allowed us in. And if you're coming in alone make sure to let them know so they keep the bollards down long enough for you to return to your car and drive in.

The Parador itself has been recently renovated but the result is that the interior design has removed most of the historic charm of this building. We have stayed in a number of Paradors across Spain and their interiors are much superior to this one. Our accommodation and the amenities were top notch. The washroom was a beautiful design and furnishings and lighting was well done. The bar is rather lacking in any charm. You feel like you're in a cafeteria. But the outside restaurant seating area is very lovely. The lunch we had was excellent and the breakfasts were generous and plentiful.

However, if I were to stay in Caceres again, for the extra euros, I would recommend the Relais & Chateaux next door. We had the most amazing dinner there - one of the best we've had in Spain... and we've had quite a few!

“Enchanting Parador in old city”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 October 2011

Travelled from Oropesa via Guadalupe and Trujillo - a must see City in itself and arrived up cobbled narrow streets into old city. Parking was really difficult to secure but the waiter directed me to reception and the gentleman on desk volunteered and helped to move his motor-bike to squeeze me into last parking bay. The Parador has been modernised and was wonderful. We had a splendid meal in ouside patio. in morning left our luggage in reception and explored old town. Really lovely. As we walked round narrow streets could hear singing. Came upon church with two young men playing spanish guitar and singing - wonderful. Overall a very friendly city and lovely experience.
