I can't disagree with Marieolive - the Palacete Alameda is fiendishly difficult to find. This is not the fault of the hotel; approaching the city from the north, the signs for the Ciudad Monumental had me driving in circles for some time. (I think it is easier to find the old town from the Trujillo road). By chance, and after driving up some very unpromising streets, I eventually found the Plaza Mayor (by identifying the hotel Iberia) whereupon my city map began to make sense.

A second stroke of luck was finding a parking space on c/Margallo, a few doors up from the hotel. The Alameda has two free parking spaces for residents, but these are often occupied.

We stayed for two nights. The hotel has recently been restored from a delapidated building. There are nine rooms on two floors; the rooms facing onto the central patio appeared larger, quieter and more desirable. Decor is eccentric, but ceilings are high, the bed comfortable and the bathroom enormous. Breakfast is served outside, and was adequate, with particularly good coffee. Little English is spoken.

Caceres was a highlight of our trip. The old city is beautifully preserved, yet not inundated with tourists, and very open. Many of the buildings are typical conquistador mansions that house free museums and exhibitions, or are accessible simply to admire. The hotel is close, and you can retire from sightseeing in the midday heat to rest and have lunch on the patio.

We are practised in the art of finding hotels in old Spanish city centres-but this one nearly defeated us. The hotel had sent us a map but this was impossible to follow since so many of the roads were closed off for road works and our sat. nav could not cope with the intricacies of the one way system. After about an hour we left the car in a car park and set off on foot. On arriving we found that the doors were locked. It took an age before a lady eventually opened the door and despite the fact that we had a reservation she clearly was not expecting us. She was not particularly friendly or welcoming and we were left with the impression that we had disturbed her quiet Sunday. There were clearly no other guests staying that night.
Our room was spacious and clean but had no external windows-the only window looked on to an internal courtyard so we had to close the shutters if we wanted privacy and the room then felt claustrophobic. There was a strong smell of musty pot pourri/ dried flowers.Having orientated ourselves my husband set out to find a way to bring the car to the hotel -this took a long and frustrating time-not the most relaxing way to spend a sunday afternoon in Spain! There is no car park so we parked on the road outside.
Breakfast-toast and packaged jam-was served on the internal patio-the plants and ornaments made this a pleasant place to sit
I do not think that we saw this hotel at its best -may be because we were visiting outside their normal busy season. It felt like we were intruders into someone's home, encroaching on their time and space.. It is a charming place and good value for money but certainly not 'luxurious' as described in one of the leading guide books to Spain

Palacete Alameda was what I expected: a charming place very near the Plaza Mayor. Nice and helpful staff.

Lovely place with great service. Beautifully decorated and really comfortable.
