“Greeted with complete indifference on our honeymoon”

I would love to say that our honeymoon began wonderfully, however, thanks to the Stadt Hamburg, it really didn`t.
We arrived, as planned, at 4am, following our wedding and reception, still in white wedding dress and dinner jacket, to be greeted by a stone faced concierge who seemed completely indifferent to us.
My husband (who is German, so there was no confusion in terms of language) had booked us the best suite in the hotel. When we arrived the room was completely blank, no flowers, not a "Congratulations" card, nothing, even though it had been made clear that this was our honeymoon.
Througout our stay, I don`t think we received a single friendly word, nor an unfriendly one, just complete indifference.
What a shame. It`s a beautiful hotel, but was completely let down by the staff there.

  • Disliked — The attitude of the staff
  • Tips/Secrets — This is meant to be the best hotel on the island, I say, try hotels which are much cheaper, they are just as clean and well presented, and much friendlier!

As Relais Chateaux addicts we booked the Stadt Hambug as it was both on a German Island we wished to visit and in our 'bible' - the Relais Chateaux book.

The hotel car picked us up from the airport which was less than 10 minutes from the hotel, service was both couteous and efficient. My husband and I were travelling with my 9 stepdaughter and they could not have been friendlier or more accomodating to her. The room was spacious, and the bathrooms very well appointed. Bed and linen were of the best quality. The Hotel has two restaurants - a bistro and a mor expensive gourmand. The service and the food in the bistro was excellent but the service in the other was v-e-r-y s-l-o-w indeed. The food was excellent though, so just allow yourself a few hours for dinner. The spa facilities were great and given that we were English and spoke no german we were treated very well indeed. We will be returning soon I hope!!
