“lovely location and setting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 November 2011

Genk is a pretty little town, and the nh genk hotel has a great location within it, set beside a lovely lake. The rooms were adequate, with everything you could need. The staff were very pleasant. quick to check in and out. breakfast is way overpriced, but there are many options in town to choose from. I would stay here again, which speaks for itself. thanks for a pleasant stay.

“Nice hotel . . . some small faults”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 November 2011

Driving from Germany to the UK, we wanted somewhere reasonably priced but quite nice to break the journey. Genk seemed to fit the bill.

Location. Fairly easy to find, not far off the E314. Almost right in Genk city centre, just across the road is the main shopping centre, walk through it and you will get to the town square. Good free car parking in front of hotel via a barrier. Genk is not a quaint old Belgian city full of old world atmosphere, it’s quite new, but pleasant. At the rear of the hotel is a nice lake with ducks and swans etc, good for a short evening or morning walk.

Staff were extremely helpful, friendly, polite, and efficient.

Room was of a very good standard. Lots of space, a great comfy bed, easy chairs, tea & coffee, mini-bar, trouser press. A bonus for me was the availability of a smoking room, quite unusual these days, but the rooms are quite large so on entering for the first time there wasn’t that unpleasant stale smoke smell, even my wife (a non smoker) commented on this. The room was 3rd floor at the back of the hotel and overlooked the lake, very nice. However, I have one adverse comment. The toilet was completely separate from the bathroom, which is fairly common in some European hotels. Maybe it’s just me but I really dislike this, I find it somewhat unhygienic to have to open and close doors without washing hands after using the toilet. I don’t know if all rooms at the hotel are like this.

One strange thing. In the elevator was a device that automatically sprayed a small amount of scented liquid. Well ok, but this is the same type of device that gets used in toilets, so the smell in the elevator reminded me of toilets. They need to change the scent.

Eating and Drinking. Not much to say. We went out for dinner in a local bar/restaurant, and skipped breakfast deciding instead to have an early lunch in the town. Breakfast was about 16 Euros, not unusual for a mid-range hotel, but too high. Breakfast would probably be very good, but it is just breakfast, and I can get lunch for two for just a bit more than 32 Euros.

Would I stay again ? Yes, depending on the room rate. We paid 65 Euros booking direct in advance online, I thought that this was a bargain. But the published rack rate in reception was very much higher, and I suspect that this would be the case when things are busier. We stayed in a chilly November, I can imagine sitting at a table outside the bar overlooking the lake sipping a beer in Summer.

Room Tip: Room at back of hotel on 3rd/4th floor for lake view. If a smoker, there are a few smoking rooms

“Not worthy to be a 4-star NH”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 October 2011

Booked this hotel because it was an NH, it was on the route and the price was good.
However the hotel is quite shabby. It feels a bit dirty and run down. The air conditioning didn't work (mentioned it to the receptionist, who answered "There is no aircon, the dials on the walls don't work".
The dimmable lights had energy saving bulbs in them (which you can not dim), so they were either on (flickering) or off.
We paid 65,- for one night (weekend deal) which was ok. But the regular price of 200,- is madly overpriced. The stay was not bad, but the hotel should have 2 starts and not a NH-sign.
Not recommended.

“Lovely Hotel, very nice staff.”

We stayed here for two nights - on the way and on the way back from Germany. It was really clean ( the bathrooms were faultless) and the beds were comfortable. Breakfast was plentiful and varied. We ate in the restaurant and the food was very good. The bar staff were really friendly and all spoke English. We had a lake view and enjoyed walking around the lake into the park.Very good indeed.

Room Tip: Nice to have view of the lake which we did.

“Great hotel and smashing location.”

Just had 3 nights in this hotel and found it to be a great place. Front of house staff were excellent and most helpful, all spoke perfect english which is good as my flemish is very rusty!! Nice breakfast as well although a little pricey, a cheaper cafe straight across the road if you were on a budget. Free car park. Lovely walk around the lake at the back.
