“Nice hotel . . . some small faults”
Driving from Germany to the UK, we wanted somewhere reasonably priced but quite nice to break the journey. Genk seemed to fit the bill.
Location. Fairly easy to find, not far off the E314. Almost right in Genk city centre, just across the road is the main shopping centre, walk through it and you will get to the town square. Good free car parking in front of hotel via a barrier. Genk is not a quaint old Belgian city full of old world atmosphere, it’s quite new, but pleasant. At the rear of the hotel is a nice lake with ducks and swans etc, good for a short evening or morning walk.
Staff were extremely helpful, friendly, polite, and efficient.
Room was of a very good standard. Lots of space, a great comfy bed, easy chairs, tea & coffee, mini-bar, trouser press. A bonus for me was the availability of a smoking room, quite unusual these days, but the rooms are quite large so on entering for the first time there wasn’t that unpleasant stale smoke smell, even my wife (a non smoker) commented on this. The room was 3rd floor at the back of the hotel and overlooked the lake, very nice. However, I have one adverse comment. The toilet was completely separate from the bathroom, which is fairly common in some European hotels. Maybe it’s just me but I really dislike this, I find it somewhat unhygienic to have to open and close doors without washing hands after using the toilet. I don’t know if all rooms at the hotel are like this.
One strange thing. In the elevator was a device that automatically sprayed a small amount of scented liquid. Well ok, but this is the same type of device that gets used in toilets, so the smell in the elevator reminded me of toilets. They need to change the scent.
Eating and Drinking. Not much to say. We went out for dinner in a local bar/restaurant, and skipped breakfast deciding instead to have an early lunch in the town. Breakfast was about 16 Euros, not unusual for a mid-range hotel, but too high. Breakfast would probably be very good, but it is just breakfast, and I can get lunch for two for just a bit more than 32 Euros.
Would I stay again ? Yes, depending on the room rate. We paid 65 Euros booking direct in advance online, I thought that this was a bargain. But the published rack rate in reception was very much higher, and I suspect that this would be the case when things are busier. We stayed in a chilly November, I can imagine sitting at a table outside the bar overlooking the lake sipping a beer in Summer.
Room Tip: Room at back of hotel on 3rd/4th floor for lake view.
If a smoker, there are a few smoking rooms
