“Will use again when in the area”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

Just returned from a 4 day stay while on business in the area, found this a good place to stay. Nice warm room, breakfast & dinner good, staff very friendly & helpful. A lot of places I've used in the past tend to be quite noisy at night with people returning to rooms, but my room was lovely & quiet.

A lot of people comment on finding the hotel via a Sat Nav, which directs you on to the M4 which passes behind the hotel, but can't get off to the location. After colleagues had this problem the previous week, I noticed that putting the postcode into my TomTom, it came up with the M4 location, but under that the address Mill Lane. Select this one, and it finds the hotel OK.

I'm likely to be back in the area in the future and will probably make this my first choice.

“Christmas break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

We had booked for the two night Christmas package staying Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and leaving after breakfast on Boxing Day. This package included the Carol Service on Christmas Eve with mulled wine and then a three couse meal in the restaurant accompanied by a pianist. Breakfast for the two mornings, a champagne and canape reception before a four course Christmas lunch accompanied by a trio; and then a light supper buffet was served Christmas evening. We arrived eventually mid afternoon after trying to find the hotel for about 30 minutes; unfortunately, the sat nav thought the hotel was along the M4! When we found it, we had a job trying to find the entrance and parking area so was further delayed. The reception staff were friendly and helpful and answered any questions we had. We were pleased with the size of the room and found the bathroom acceptable. A big plus point was that there were two easy chairs and a table in a standard bedroom and that you did not have to pay for an upgrade to get a comfy room. the only drawback was that the room safe was on the top shelf in the wardrobe and you would only be able to use it if you were a minimum height of about 5' 10" or if you stood on a chair. There was a lower shelf where we felt it could be re-sited. We found the Carol service and mulled wine good although very crowded, we did have to sit outside the bar area or in the reception area if you wanted a seat. The meal was excellent and all waiting staff were good, friendly and helpful. We particularly enjoyed having the pianist playing during our meal. The one disappointment of the evening was that the real ale pub near the hotel was closed from Christmas Eve until Boxing Day so my husband was unable to have a decent pint of beer. The breakfasts on both days were fine we had no problem finding a table and the food was acceptable. The Christmas Day lunch was a similar experience to Christmas Eve with no seating in the bar area and we found we were sitting outside the bar area with our champagne and canapes. One of the waiting staff who was working both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day we found exceptional did bring out a table for us and also got our canapes etc as it was so busy. We again found the Christmas Lunch of a high standard and thoroughly enjoyed it. The hotel was well sited in a lovely location for visiting local attractions and for country walks. I would recommend this hotel.

“Very Friendly & helpful staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

Looks good from the outside & there is plenty of parking. Staff at reception were efficient & helpful, in fact I found all the staff wherever we encountered them (bar, restaurant etc.) to be really helpful, polite & a good sense of humour. The bar staff & reception were very helpful in pointing out things to do in the area. The whole hotel looks very clean & well maintained. The twin room we had was quite small but it did the job & was reasonably well equipped (safe, hairdryer, tv, tea & coffee making facilities etc.) Free Wi-Fi was available & that was a major plus for me. The bedding was clean. although the sheet covering the mattress has two holes in it which was pretty poor, but being crisp & clean was more important to me. The mattress itself was very firm, which I didn't like but it probably more a matter of preference. The room was very quiet, I never heard any noise from outside or the rest of the hotel. To give an idea of the overall standard of the rooms it very much reminded me of a Premier Inn (although I think Prem Inn beds are more comfortable). Probably the biggest issue for me was that the whole hotel felt chilly, rather than warm & cosy. When I mentioned this to the staff they very promptly responded with a heater for our room but to sit in the bar or the restaurant for breakfast meant wearing a fleece. Breakfast was good quality, plentiful & a reasonable choice. Shame really about the cold because the staff were so lovely & tried really hard to make this a great place to stay. Spend some money on the heating please but otherwise you're doing OK.

Room Tip: Be sure you know where you are going. My Sat Nav told me I was there whilst still on the M4.

“This could be such a good hotel but....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

Stayed here for 3 mights over Christmas whilst visiting family in the locality.

Hotel is nicely located just a short distance from the Motorway.

Welcome & check in was fine. Room clean & bed linen crisp & clean although no matress protector on bed. Just simply a sheet straight over the mattress.

We had a large bathroom which un fortunately was freezing cold as there was no source of heating in it apart from a small towel rail which could hardly accomodate 1 towel. Also no where else in bathroom to hang bathrobes or towels. Asked for a heater to stand by bathroom and this was supplied but only after the Receptionist suggested that if we took the towel off the small towel rail it might provide some heat!!.When I pointed out the bathrooms shortcomings the response was " that's the way it is designed".

Had booked & paid for the Christmas Eve package of Mulled wine reception, Carol singers & a meal. However all the local neighbourhood seemed to be coming in an grabbing the mulled wine with the result that a number of guests that had paid for the package did not receive any. However the meal and the restaurant service later was fine.

Breakfast on Christmas morning was an experience. We were greeted at the entrance to the breafast room and simply told to "go and find a table". Needless to say there were no tables spare apart from a number that needed clearing. Hence back to where we started to arrange for someone to clear some tables.

Had ordered Newspapers for Boxing Day and the next day. No papers arrived on Boxing Day morning. Receptionists response was " it's Boxing Day they don't produce papers on Boxing Day". When I mentioned that I had just been watching the review of the mornings papers on TV she said" Oh, you can have a complimentary copy of todays Independent" Ugh!

Boxing Day breakfast experience - as fof Christmas Day experience all over again.

This is a well appointed hotel, in a nice location .It would not take too much to make it a really good hotel.

Room Tip: Don't rely entirely on the Sat Nav to get here

“Christmas Party”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

Myself and my team (22 of us) went to a Christmas Party at the Reading Moat House recently and we had a great night!! On arrival we were greeted by really friendly staff and given a lovely glass of bubbly!! Even though not everyone had arrived (not from our party) we were sat for dinner, the staff coped really well with the others when they did arrive. The food itself was great, no complaints there at all! We then moved onto the dance floor, which was next to the bar. It was a little small for the amount of people dancing, but we were happy. The only slightly dissapointing thing of the night was the DJ, he didnt exactly play music to our taste! Few of my friends stayed overnight and said their room was very big and were really pleased. Overall the night was great and we were looked after really well by all the staff. Would definately recommend this hotel for a party and we would happily go again especially as the price was so good!
