On arrival, the receptionist was friendly and helpful. The room was clean and spacious with the usual massive Premier Inn bed, which we found to be very comfortable. The bathroom was well laid out and big. One let down was the lack of electrical sockets in the room. There were only 2 and one was near to the floor by the bed. The one by the desk was hard to get to as it was wedged behind the kettle (stuck to the desk and with a broken lid). All of this made drying my hair a bit more complicated than it needed to be. We needed to borrow an iron and that was no problem, although that too was broken (the bit that keeps the water in on top was broken so the water tended to slop out when using it).
We went to the pub for dinner and it really is very poor indeed. Our waitress when we arrived was OK, and took our order fairly quickly but we then waited a long time for our meals. I had steak and chips and while the steak was fine (just OK, not the best) the chips were stone cold! We had waited so long that I decided just to leave it. The first waitress then went off shift and was replaced by a new waitress who hid away from the diners (literally!) At one point I left the table to go to find her and found her hiding around the corner, behind the desk. She jumped when I turned up at the alcove that the desk was in. The restaurant was empty except for us and one other couple so it would have been possible to offer fairly attentive service. We ordered some wine to take back to the room (by then the karaoke in the pub had kicked in) and the waitress had to come back three times because they did not have the one we had ordered. Finally, our bill was incorrect. I felt quite sorry for the waitress because she seemed to be terrified of the guests (I didn’t complain at all) and I didn’t feel she had been adequately trained.
While we were eating we had a good view of the smokers from the pub who were using the smoking area, just on the other side of the glass from our table. As the evening wore on we were ‘entertained’ by the drunken antics of the pub-goers.
I had the feeling that the restaurant was an unwanted distraction from the main business of this place, which is the pub. It was not a pleasant or relaxing place to eat a meal.
We decided to skip breakfast!
