“Poor excuse for a hotel and restaurant.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 September 2011

Says on the website "Flagship" but I would say its more "sinking ship." My relatives stayed in The Bruce Hotel on the 22nd to 24th September 2011. Their intention was for 4 days but they left early as the service and experience was so poor. The hotel now caters for coach tours however I am told that in the past they had a reasonable standard. When my relatives arrived the receptionist could not find their booking. After travelling for 24 hours this is quite annoying. The rooms and decor are in a bad way and it looks as though the brown stained walls have not been painted since the smoking ban went in place in 2006(Or before). The heating in the room was set at 15 degrees so they felt cold the whole time they were there. There is a disco that runs till 2 in the morning so expect a really bad sleep. At breakfast there is "2 old fellows" serving who my relatives believed "seemed to have a gripe going with each other." As such they were served coffee and breakfast by both of them seperately with no obvious communication in place. We were stupid enough to book an evening meal. When we turned up the receptionist again had lost the booking. There was a clash apparently with a German coach trip. The waitor offered us a seat in the hallway to get around this which we felt was "unacceptable." They eventually relented and offered us a seat in the restaurant with the breakfast settings for the following day and after a little reasoning they set it for dinner. The menu eventually arrived. It says "A la Carte" on the website but we were shocked when they gave us a photocopy of the "tour menu" with a very limited selection. We decided at that point we would leave. I informed the waitor and he apologised but recall that the barman was laughing loudly during this. (It's funny laughing at your bosses lose money I guess or perhaps it was nervous laughter as they knew they were providing such a poor service.) To sum up, If I was an owner of the Bruce Hotel I would be outraged and really angry at my hotel being run so shoddily. There seems to be no communication or procedures in place for dealing with guests. I was disgusted at my family being treated so poorly after such a long journey. The Bruce is a complete disgrace!! If you can afford it go elsewhere. If you can't go to a youth hostel instead.

“Nice staff, good food, badly needs refurb.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 August 2011

Very cheap - I suppose you get what you pay for.
Friendly staff, good dinner and breakfast.
Very uncomfortable bed. Noisy nightclub - didn't get to sleep until 2am.
Very shabby, judging by the decor, hasn't been decorated since the 70's.
"Free wireless" - only problem was that the signal didn't reach the room - useless for business purposes.

Room Tip: If you have to stay here, go for the executive room.

“the bruce needs a spruce”

on a recent stay at the bruce hotel, the bedroom and bathoom were. grubby, cold, and very badly needing refurbished. Hot buffet breakfast served on cold plates, and no food left by 9.00am instead of 10.00am service time. Noise from disco downstairs was very aloud, kept everyone awake at 3.ooam . The only good thing about this hotel was the quick checkout and location , , staff pleasant. Will not recommend to anyone.

“Lovely restaurant and food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 May 2011

We didn't actually stay overnight in the hotel but had booked a meal in the Four Seasons restaurant for a small family gathering on Easter Sunday. The restaurant and table were beautifully laid out. Nothing was too much trouble for our waiter and we all enjoyed our meal . A lovely end to our visit home. Thank you.

“hogmanay at the bruce”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2011

Dont really want the whole world to know about this cos it might make it a bit more difficult to book next year but the staff do so well they deserve a mention. this was our 4th year at the bruce at hogmanay and as usual had a tremendous night. 16 of us all accomodated at the one table,so well organised, food great, music, now you may not think the rooms are'right up there' but i think jim and the team do a fantastic job on what is the busiest night of the year.Another reason that we keep going back is the bar prices are the same as usual and not 'hiked' because your a captured, and you can get bar service without a hitch. Again my compiments guys, see u at new year.
