When I arrived at the Crutherland, my initial impression was good: a nice hotel set in fine grounds. I'd booked a dinner, bed and breakfast rate of £124, so the hotel is not cheap. When I got to my room, it was freezing cold. The electric radiator had been turned off. I had to shiver for half an hour until the radiator heated the room. The bed was clean and comfortable, but both armchairs in my room had threadbare arms. Not so good. The rest of the room was fine, apart from the TV remote control which did not work. I had to turn the TV on and change channels manually. When I went down to the bar, it too was cold - 1 lady was drinking wearing a jacket - and the restaurant was also chilly.
One of the reasons for booking the hotel was its 2 red rosettes for food, but my DB&B rate only entitled me to the Market Day menu. I was told I could choose from the main menu, but there would be a £3 supplement for any starter and a £5 supplement for any main course. I chose my starter from the main menu and the main course from the Market Day menu. The food was superb! When it came to dessert, I asked whether, as I did not want to take a dessert, the £3 supplement for my starter could be waived. I was told that this was not possible.
So, overall, not a bad stay, just not quite as good as I had been hoping for. Maybe I am being too picky, but my room should be warm on arrival on a cold winter's day, and the public rooms should not be chilly. Threadbare armchairs are not a disaster but just take away from what was actually a good, clean bedroom.
